Berkeley LL.M 2013/2014

FYI, I asked for another extension of the deadline and it didn't work !
Is there anyone in the same case (still waiting for news from CLS, NYU, Harvard). I don't know what to do, and would be annoyed to pay a first deposit while I should hear from the other schools by mid-march !

Did you try to ask the other schools for an expedite decision?

Unfortunately it doesn't work...Columbia tells u to try to ask for an expedited review but I did it already 2 times an nothing happened!!

Kiki17,

I also got the email yesterday.. is Berkeley your first option or are you waiting for other decisions??

Sorry sorry sorry for the delay!!!! Anyway, yes it is my first option because I want to concentrate on IP law and, in my opinion, that program at Berkeley is the best!!

I was waiting for Columbia but in the end I decided for Berkeley! Is it your first choice as well?

Guys. I have spent times reading some threads and app trackers of last year and found some interesting results. Some applicants who got waitlisted and even rejected by Berkeley have been admitted by other schools which generally ranked way higher than Berkeley, for example, Harvard or Yale. But I don't think they submitted far different personal statements only designed for Berkeley. Do you know any unique standard for Berkeley's admission, other than the tier of first law school, grade or toefl score?

Guybrush,

I don't think they have any quantifiable reasoning for their decision making. I do know for a fact that they weigh the personal statement very heavily. I think they probably get tired of : "My name is so and so and I have wanted to become a lawyer forever just so I can help people blablablabla...".

My friend for example did his LLB in Pakistan through the distance programme offered by UoL, his grades were so-so and yet, he got into Berkeley. He now works at a top firm in DC.

Jitana, thank you for your quick response. I think you mean the uniqueness of personal statement.. do you know anything about the references? Actually I have had trouble in choosing three recommendations out of four I have requested because Berkeley limited the number of letters of recommendations, as you know.

Yes,

I think it's the uniqueness of the personal statement. Like one of the Dean of admissions told me, they can smell a fake like dogs smell meat. They read thousands of these things and I think they want something different, something interesting and not some law school robot who studies while he eats, showers and sleeps.

As far as recommendations go, choose people who know your academics and your work ethic. So maybe your professor and your boss?

Good luck!!!

Hi everyone!

First, congratulations to all of you who are accepted and for all who will be accepted soon (I know it is long to wait).

I am a current LL.M student at Berkeley and I can tell you that you will have a great year!:)

I am sorry for disturbing you in this post, but last year, before arriving at Berkeley, I bought all my furnitures from another LL.M student and I thought that it was great and really reassuring. I promised to myself to do the same for others when I will leave. So now, I know that I will leave soon and I would like to find student interested in the furnitures. I can buy everything as a package (I would prefer) or divide something. I live in Manville (one of your possibility in Berkeley and proposed by the University) so you can be sure that everything fit for this kind of student apartments (and for apartments in general of course).

Last year, the student left for me all the furnitures in a storage (not expensive and really easy here) so when I arrived I had just to take everything and install myself! It was so convenient since you are really busy when you arrive.

So if some of you are interested in the proposition, message me in PV:)

So now, good luck to everyone and congratulations again! You are about to live a great experience:)

Just received an e-mail from Berkeley notifying me that I did not receive the scholarship. Maybe Penn will offer something in the next few days, and then it will be easier to decide where to enroll.
quick question - did you ask them about the scholarship and got the info that you didn't receive it as a reply? or was it in an "unsolicited" message of any kind?

just asking b/c i received admission by UC Berkeley (and NYU as well by now), but didn't a word about scholarships/waivers. i tend to believe that this means i won't get any (one 'smaller' school that i had applied offered me a waiver right with the admission).

feel honored by their admission, but due to changes at work (semi-promotion: more duties, huge project, but no raise ;) ), i might not be able to leave this year. we'll see :)

No, not really...I have offers from a few other schools and I'm still waiting on Columbia, Harvard, Stanford and Chicago (standby group)...But the deadline was too short and I ended up deciding to decline.
