BERKELEY 2014-15

Denning123

Hey guys,

I was wondering whether any of the students currently enrolled at Berkeley could tell me how many course units they have been taking throughout the academic year?

Thank you very much in advance for your help!

You need 21 units to graduate, and you have to take between 10-16 units each semester (16 being max number of units, 17 is also allowed if you file a petition). Most people do 13-14 units per semester, meaning total of 26-28 units for the whole LLM program.

Thank you very much for providing this useful information!

Thank you, Frosner!
I could see from your apptracker that you have chosen Berkeley over Columbia. If you don't mind could you share your reasons behind this decision?

Just personal ones. I have friends that are studying at Columbia and Berkeley at the moment - I liked the Berkeley stories more ;). To me, atmosphere and teaching seemed better in Berkeley. Besides, I prefer West Coast to East Coast, SF to NY. That's pretty subjective, I suppose. Ranking of Columbia might be slightly better, but I think there is nearly no difference in general reputation, at least in Germany.

I guess Berkeley "sounds" better for Europeans. Columbia doesn't say too much. This is not to say Columbia is cr^p, I'm just pointing out a fact.

Agree. Berkeley seems to be more well-know in Europe than other better ranked U.S. Law School such as UPenn or even Chicago (I guess).

ranked in the Fourth Quartile of the waitlist. Statistically, is it hopeless...?

Just wondering how you were able to find out your waitlist ranking, I've already put a deposit on another school I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing by holding out. Thanks!

Berkeley Law would send you an email after they made the decision. The people got waitlisted can find their ranking in the email.

This was all I got in the email:

"Due to the nature of our admissions process, we are not always able to release waitlist ranking information to students. At this time we do not have a specific ranking for your application. If this information changes, we will inform you via email."

I am a liittle confused since I read your resume and it indicated you are a U.S. citizen. Why did you choose to apply for a LLM instead of J.D?

JaRule12b6, see you got waitlisted at Berkeley - if I were you I'd wait for more info on that and reapply next year. I wouldn't go to Southwestern. Don't hold anything against me :)

Southwestern's Entertainment and Media Law program is a pipeline into the entertainment industry, which is where I want to ultimately end up. Obviously Berkeley is by far a better school and my fingers are crossed that I'll end up getting in, but either way I'll be out in CA working towards getting a cool job.

I hear you :) I had said "if I were you"... so that would be my choice, waiting for (and, if necessary reapplying to) Berkeley

I would be really interested in what they have to say if you can share with us their response..maybe they review applications on a first come first serve basis
