Any Chance in CLS?

Joe Black

Dear friends,
I wonder if anyone knows the backgrounds of admitted students in CLS with no full-time work experience.
I am currently in my junior year from a good but not top law school in China. In the first term of my junior year, I studied international relations in UCL. During the term, I did a research about international law under a supervisor from UCL laws and got his recommendation letter. The revised Chinese edition of the essay will be published in June. My main interest is in international law with a sub-interest in contract law (may sound weird).

As an undergraduate, I dont have full-time work experience. However, I have 2 interns from High Court and an enterprise in Fortune 500. Besides the research mentioned above, I did 2-3 other researches in my own law school. One of them was sponsored by the Ministry of Education. The essay is also going to be published in June.

With a decent GPA (90/100) and Toefl( 27 28 28 29), I am trying my luck in the 2012 fall. My extra curriculum includes team leader in English Debating Society and member of law school debate team (participated in international debate competition and won national prize), voluntary works including those in clinics and events like EXPO 2010, editor in my Law School Review, defense lawyer in the mooting court etc. National scholarship and awards alike (with distinction etc) are also achieved.

Always being aware that CLS rarely recruits green hands, I feel unable to change anything substantially as an undergraduate who is preparing for the PRC bar. Can any friend help me calculate my chance?

I think you would not have any problem getting an offer with your credentials althoug I believe having work experience is valuable in order take full advantage of the LLM. Focus on the essays and letters.

You have to consider that after investing time and money in your studies you should be paid better but that would not happen unless you also have some work experience.

good luck!

Big THX to cla~
I agree with you on both points but I do have my personal concerns.
Basically, there is a strong feeling that a master degree in law with certain specialised field, (e.g. international law )will act as neccessity to my preferred working platform in international organisations. While I am aware of the fact how working experiences can add values in LLM in all rounds, I guess I am not willing to work immediately as an undergraduate, which is quite possibly just my own case.
However, your points are much appreciated~~
