a (second) LLM v. Phd ?

Hi all,

Haven't posted in a while..but since last time I did...I completed an LLM in Public international law at Bristol after an LLB in Scotland and returned to my home country (Egypt). Finding very little professional opportunities and am currently thinking about a plan that involves leaving once again.

I'm a Dual National of the US (where I was born) so im considering taking another LLM so that I can network/prep for the bar in NY or wherever.I think I'd have a strong shot at some top programs. However, I've read alot about how poor the job market in the US is currently for lawyers ( and everyone else) would it be worth it do go into major debt with little light at the end of the tunnel?

The other option im considering is to study for the GRE and applying for PhD in political science..specializing in Public Intl. law. I'm not too picky about becoming a lawyer..i just want some kind of plan more than anything and i feel a PhD would give me that and allow me to pursue an interest of mine without incurring any debt.

What do you guys think?

Thanks!

Getting a job in the US after an LLM in a TOP UNIV in US is not impossible (I know several people who have done it).

Getting a job after having a PHD in Political Science must be more difficult (unless you consider academia).

Just my thoughts,
H.

Thanks H.

I am very open to a career in academia. I am also open to a career in law. I guess my question boils down to whether an LLM is worth it. The general view seems to be that the JD is the best route for someone who wants establish themselves as a practitioner in the states which is what makes me gravitate towards PhD since it doesn't require going into hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt at a time when jobs are scarce.
