UK LLB

Cosmo

Hi guys!

I was just going through previous posts and had a quick question that I'm hoping someone can answer.

Presently im finishing up my honours degree + diploma in Canada and am anticipating come to the UK after getting married to my fiance who resides there already.

I was wondering what the process would be and if it would be worth completing my LLB there.

I hear it's two years to complete, however should I choose to come back to Canada to practice, I would probably have to spend another two years studying and writing exams.

Has anyone been through this situation and is it worth it? How long would it take?

an LLB is usually 3 years, though some schools may allow you to cram in some extra subjects during the summer and do it in less time.

considering that you will already have an undergraduate degree i don't think you should waste your time doing the LLB, which is another 3 year undergraduate degree.

i think the better options are:

1) do a 3 year JD in the US or Canada - couple this with 2 years work experience thereafter (which can be in the UK) and you are eligible to sit the easy QLTT. therefore, you will be dual qualified in 5 years, which is better than just UK qualified in 6 years (LLB(3)+LPC(1)+Training Contract(2)). There are quite a few US and Canadian lawyers working in London who are just out of law school. Caveat: you'll need to go to a top school and get good grades to do this.

or;

2) if you must move to the UK now, then do the CPE (common professional examination) which is just 1 year, followed by the LPC and training contract. That means you will qualify as a UK lawyer in 4 years. Caveat: you will not be eligible to sit the New York Bar (if it matters to you) without the LLB, unless you first do an LLM.

I think option 1 is better.
