I'll really love to come to aberdeen next year to do llm in oil and gas, but i've one problem. I had a 3 honours in the university in nigeria(ll.b) and a 2(1) at the bar exams which is one year program also in nigeria. I'm worried cos i heard wat is needed is the university degree(ll.b) instead of the bar degree.
still worried

I notice your post has been left unanswered for quite awhile now... and I don't think anyone here has got an answer to that question. At first I'd say what matters are the grades you got in university, because the bar is (please correct me if I'm wrong and this doesnt apply to your country) only one test... one single shot, so it really doesn't reflect your entire performance over several years. But like I said before in some other post, if you really wanted to go to Aberdeen, the only possible way to find out whether you had the right credentials would be applying.

thanks i appreciate

Joey, you would be wise applying for a range of universities rather than focusing your attention on Aberdeen.
If you have a third class law degree (assuming this is equivalent to a UK third class law degree) it is unlikely you'll gain entry to any well-known UK LLM programme.

kerfuffle, its good to know but what i gathered is that universities in england are stricter in terms of academic requirements. Also i'm looking out for employment prospects. I guess like beicon said, if i really wanna know i should apply. Thanks anyway.

JoeyKrak,
For some weird reason I can't send a PM. Anyway your 2.1 in Nigerian Law School should help, I thnk... Are you looking to apply for admission in 2011/2012? If so, you should get more work experience before you send off an early application. I think you should also consider applying to Dundee. Excellent refrences and a compelling personal statement should help as well. Alternatively you could apply to some UNIS which offer some oil and gas/energy modules but don't necessarily offer exclusive Oil and Gas LLM degrees.

Certainly don't underestimate the influence of a great reference. They can be difficult to get written when you would like, but they're incredibly important. I also support the suggestion about (for anyone in any situation) to apply or at least consider a range of programs. When I started looking, I found some that I got really excited about and would not have considered otherwise.

Applying to a number of Universities is good but the result gets you confused... I applied last month, n thinking that I m late in applying for my LLM, I applied to around 12 Universities n got through 11 of them (Liverpool rejected me, can you believe that, lol)... Anyways, now I am in a mess... So confused n thinking which one to join (Durham, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Notts, City, etc etc)... Some have a good ranking, some have great profs, someone is giving scholarship, n d reasons keep pouring in... Poor me!!!
But I think this situation comes wid every1 who applies!!! :) How do you guys decide???

simple pali.you yourself gave the answer....just make a checklist with all the above points you mentioned starting with the area in which you want to specialize, module, course structure, reputation of the profs and their expertise, reputation of the univ, experience skills knowledge that you seek to aspire for your future endeavour and last but not the least whether fees accomodation living expenses with scholarship or not falling in line with your budget.
btw scottish univs impart civil law....won't that be a bit of botheration for you considering the fact that you are graduating from nliu?

Hi Reet,
All this is easier said than done.. I m going crazy thinking abt all dis.. :)
But considering all d factors, I might b accepting Durham's offer soon.. Though its expensive as compared to other Univ's but it has an edge over others.. :)
Good luck!
Cheers

Pali
I have been in your shoes..I even had 4 scholarship offers and really felt bad rejecting the other 3 (but I am so thankful I even got 1, betetr yet 4).In the end I went with the uni that I had really wanted to get into from the beginning and never thought I would ever get into, the uni that I would always regret if I never took the chance and the uni that would provide me with a great stepping stone ,reputation- wise in Africa once I was done with LLM.So it had to be LSE, out of the 8 I had to reject, UCL and Nottingham were the hardest and had been putting it off till yesterday.
If Durham is where you need to be, then have a blast!

Tabmas,
Yes, rejecting offers is not a gr8 feeling... Choosing LSE over UCL is tuf n im glad u r happy wid ur decision...
I'm hoping d same wid Durham which has an excellent reputation n gr8 profs, n d city is peaceful n nice... Its such an old one n maintaining that ranking n status throughout can be tuf at times :)

yes pali, I can understand the dillemma. To be frank even i am facing the same issues but almost zeroed in. Good luck in Durham. Its a good university with picturesque colleges. I got the membership of castle college and pretty liked it. However I am preferring either UCL or QM as Durham doesnt have any module on arbitration emphatically or else I would love to be in Durham as it seems to be quite a peaceful area.
