Query pertaining to BCL admission, grades and the like

adelb

Hi,

I am an Australian law student, currently attending a Go8 Law School, who is curious about applying to the BCL in the future. How specifically would grades be taken into account in an application, that is to say: is a First Class Honours degree enough to warrant admission? Or would other grades and academic achievements -- GPA, class rank, rewards etc -- be taken into account?

I'm primarily worried about this given how competitive the entry to the course is, as my first year first semester was lackadaisically average (credits, blemishing my transcript), but since sem 2 of year 1 I've rebounded to a much higher standard (presently, 6.6/7.0 GPA). I've got a year and a half left, I'm sure I can further increase my GPA. Are my prospects low due to prior folly, or can I compete? What should I bear in mind for the reminder of my studies?

Many thanks.

Hi, while having a first does not guarantee an offer, it's a good starting point. Other things such as academic prizes etc. are also taken into account and this, for instance, is how a candidate can stand out from all the other candidates who already have first class degrees.

Sorry to piggy-back off the initial query, but do you have any insight / thoughts as to whether it would be disadvantageous for purposes of BCL admission if one has an LLM from another UK university? I am doing an LLM at UCL starting this September and am wondering if this will work against me if I apply for the BCL thereafter. I also intend to apply for the MPhil, although I believe that spaces are typically very limited.

No problem with that; some people on the BCL course even have PHDs

Having a stellar GPA may not be the only factor that will get you into a top LL.M. program.
