Cambridge Undergrad - LLM application

Brian

Hi

Are there any Cambridge LLM students out there with a Cambridge BA? This seems to be a very rare species indeed, for whatever reason. I'm in my second year and only got a 120 average last year. I'm hoping to improve massively (though how likely that is I'm not sure). I've heard of people getting an offer of 132 in their third year, but I'm wondering what their performance was like in their first two years, since it seems to be that most people do better in their third year.

I spoke to the course director and he seemed to suggest that if I got any kind of 2:i this year they'd at least give me an offer, with internal references counting for a lot. This at least seems plausible since I think it's unfair to equate the somewhat mystical "good 2:i" at every other University on the planet with one from Cambridge. But is it even worth me applying if I don't get at least 132 this year?

Thanks in advance

Brian

Hi,

Since you're completing your BA (law) at Cambridge I was thinking that maybe you could give me tips regarding the application process. I will graduate from McGill Univ. (Canada) with the great distinction (i.e. sth like a 3.5 GPA). What do you think are my chances? Can you tell me more about your background (if of course it does not bother you)?

I not only think of applying to Cambridge, but also Oxford, and LSE. What about Nottingham? I heard they have a good reputation too. I got accepted there, but I think I should at least take a chance with the British Ivy League.

Hi. If you're talking about 2005 entry I'm afraid you're too late - the Oxbridge deadlines are in January. The prospectus says "in the US system a CGPA of at least 3.5/4 is normally required", so you might have a good chance.

Oh sorry you want to do the Postgraduate LLB. I'm not sure about that - I'll have a look. Again, you're too late though - the Oxbridge deadline for BA applications is in October the year before entry.

Brian,

I am a bit taken aback by the arrogance of suggesting that a Cambridge undergraduate degree in law is somehow substantially more valuable than another law school. Pick up a copy of an LLM facebook and look at the qualifications of those who comprise the current class. You will be competing with students from the best universities around the world, many of whom have advanced degrees and significant work experience. I think that a weak 2:1, such as 120, will not cut it and even if you manage to pull up your socks this year and achieve better grades, you will still fall short of an offer (unless you have excelled in some courses and have a few good references in your quiver or there is extreme favouritism shown to homegrown students). Best of luck with the process. If you contact Susan Wade (LLM Administrator) she may be able to put you in contact with some students who did the law BA, followed by the LLM. In my class, there were about 4 or 5 of these folks.

Are GB law programs ranked? If so, what are the top 5 schools and in what order? Thanks.
