Cambridge & Residence Requirement

mdiath

Hello,

I am starting Cambridge Diploma in Leg. Studies in April 2010. It is a one year research degree with no coursework -some non-mandatory seminars only- and only obligation the final dissertation. However, it is a full-time degree and there is a residence requirement. I have been admitted since Jun. 2009 so I have spent about 7 months studying, preparing and writing about my essay. I am in contact with my supervisor and we have proceeded much with our work (we have the final structure of the 30,000 thesis, and 1.5 out of 4 chapters of the thesis totally ready, I have finished reading and literature gathering, although it has already costed 5 travels to UK and Cambridge). The only reason why I am admitted for April is that the professor is currently on research leave and he could not officially supervise researchers.
The problem however is that I am currently working in my home country full time as a lawyer and it is extremely difficult for me to leave in order to reside in Cambridge. I could possibly go there 3-4 times per term -let;s say once every twenty days- in order to attend a seminar or meet my professor -although according to him there is no need for more than 1-2 meeting per term- but i could -no way- leave my job for one year, (especially as I have already proceeded with my study), in order to reside without doing anything, apart from 1 seminar per week about sociolegal etc -note that 90% of my seminars programme is totally irrelevant to my subject-.
I have not yet registered in the college neither I have looked about accomodation.
So, please reply as I am getting really anxious.
1) How "strict" is actually the rule about residence in Cambridge.
2) How is it actually implemented? -as a res. student i will not have to stay in College but I typically have to reside within 10 miles from the University etc- Do they check out about where you are living?
I am really confused and I would appreciate a relevant answer from a Cambridge graduate or res. student or student in general.

Thank you in advance.
