Cambridge MCL 2013

Hi there

I've searched for a similar thread, but couldn't find it, so figured I'd start one for 2013 MCL Applicants.

Who else has applied for the 2013 MCL? I assume (and hope) your status is still "Awaiting Consideration by Department"?

I will be applying for the MCL in 2014. Is there any general advice you could give me in relation to this course? Does its application differ to an LLM application? I'm still in my undergrad and haven't applied for anything yet.

Many thanks.

I applied to MCL by mid-Nov 2012. Status "awaiting consideration by the department".

Good luck to us!

I understand from Ms Wade that we can expect the first round of offers in the first week of February or so! I also religiously keep checking CAMSIS, but I fear this is futile.

What is your background, btw? I'm a student from a South African university, graduated with a first (but not hugely high) with some practical expertise

that's nice to know. i assume that you called the faculty? it seems awfuly early to send out offers given that the applications closed on Jan the 15th + the time to send documents. Do you know on which basis they're going to give out these early offers?

Applied and yes, I was one of the few last applicants! Just send in all my supporting documentation on the deadline provided. Phew! So, presuming that will not make the first week of Feb cut, if at all I make it. I am a third-year law student, averaging first-class marks ( though not that high first-class to be honest ), some internships, student editor and your usual run-of-the mill ECs. Did anyone apply for the MLF programme? Think I botched up that application!

I also applied for the MLF but I guess we won't hear from Oxford until mid-March.

As I wrote in the Cam LLM thread:

I called Cambridge on Feb the 8th. I was informed by Ms Wade that a few offers have already been made but other than that they are still considering applications. There is no sharp deadline other than the April one but apparently we can expect offers to be made somewhere in the next few weeks. It's not a given though. Please post if anybody learns anything. I'm still 'awaiting consideration by the department' in Camsis.

See my post in the general Cam thread, they're not done yet. Given that there is apparently a new batch of LLM offers, please post if anyone gets an offer or any kind of information re MCL.

As I posted in the general Cam thread, I just called about the MCL. They are definitely still considering applications. Ms. Wade told me mine was being considered right now and that I would have news in about 2-3 weeks. Everything is still open!

If any of you had to choose between BCL and MCL what would you do? Any thread of thought will be appreciated!

They are pretty different degrees. The MCL is very corporate focused with a more practical focus. The BCL generally is not as corporate focused (though obviously they have corporate modules) and I think it is much more academic. If you are certain you are interested in a career in corporate practice, then the MCL may be for you. If you're not entirely sure about specialising in corporate subjects only OR whether you want to go into corporate practice (as opposed to going to the Bar, doing a PhD etc) then the BCL may be a better option as it is more flexible.

The MCL vs MLF is a more difficult choice I think.

Do you have to choose between MCL and MLF as well? If yes, I'd appreciate your thoughts! I'm leaning towards MLF, because it is a business, not just a law degree and it's also been around longer, but I'm not 100% sure.

No, I didn't apply for either the MCL or the MLF. My understanding is that the MLF is more finance focused than the MCL which is still more 'legal' in nature - the MLF seems about half law and half finance/economics. The MLF has only been around for a few years more than the MCL, so not much of a difference on that front imo. Again I think it depends on what you want to do with the degree, I think the MCL is more targeted at corporate legal practice than the MLF, though I never did much indepth research on either, not being particularly interested in finance!
