TOEFL/ETS abusive monopoly

"As we have not received your TOEFL scores to date, and it is well past our Early Review deadline of November 1st, you are ineligible for early consideration. Your file will be reviewed as part of our standard admissions process."

Just received today this message from Columbia. I'm desperate bc I ordered the score reports on ETS' web site eight weeks ago and only two universities out of fourteen received my score.

I already called three times ETS (New Jersey, 20 minutes each time) but they have this policy to not send more than one fee-waived score report if the reports do not reach the Universities.

ETS blames the Univerties (they all lost my report) and... the US post!!!

Really don't know what to do. Two weeks ago, after long discussions with them they agreed to send fee-waived additional score reports to three Universities. Columbia was one of them, but CLS message now makes me wonder if ETS ever sent a score report.

Their monopoly is really abusive!ETS obviously is expecting me to pay again.

Has anyone experienced the same thing? Thanks in advance for your help and advice.

I am exactly in the same situation and I am as desperate as you...

It is so frustrating!!! You try to finish your application as soon as possible to meet the 11/1 deadline and then ETS fu---- it up.

I ordered the report on 10/20!!! I managed to make a second fee-waived order a week ago, but too late

We should start a class action in the states :) (i am really thinking about it)

Moreover I believe that the universities are too severe. why can't they early review us even without the official scores? They know our scores, i sent them a copy of my score report and i believe that nobody is as stupid to lie about his TOEFL scores

and they could always tell us: if your official report does not comply with what you said you will be rejected

i am really very disappointed and i hate ETS!!!!

I was thinking to a class action too actually! But do they consider the loss a chance as a prejudice in the US?

Actually the missing score reports are just one of the many troubles I had with ETS.

Few examples: I registered for a test in Strasbourg and they booked a test in Grenoble.

I never received my paper score report for one test I took.

Plus the conditions of the test were just awfull.

To get back to the score reports, I don't understand :
- why ETS doesn't e-mail the score reports to the Universities (maybe bc they could not justify the 17 USD per report)?

- why they don't give you the option to have the score reports sent through registered mail with acknowledgement of receipt (I would have be willing to pay additional fee for that if it's the only way to make sure ETS sent the reports)?

For the Universities, I don't know: so many candidates, they won't bother. Actually they were not too severe with me. CLS rejected my application for the early review only after 1,5 month after the deadline. Georgetown warned me about the missing score report, which arrived after the deadline. They agreed to review my application anyway (and I am admitted). Harvard told me that late toefl scores won't affect my applications but added that they won't review my application without it.

When I think to what is at stake with these applications I can't help but damn ETS!

Hope the scores will finally reach the Universities for both of us. Best of luck!

Hi,
Hopefully, Im not in the same situation, but I understand it, and I totally support you guys!
I took the test once in 2001 and was really happy with ETS services and my score. A paradox: I remember having thought the whole organization was very pro.
But, I also had several troubles this year with ETS. I took a first test in October 2006, and the conditions during this test were also awful. An ETS official confirmed to me that she received several complaints about this particular center. I wanted to take a new TOEFL IBT, and discovered there was no spot available in all France before 2007! Except for TOEFL PBT!!! Come on (and no CBT BTW).
Because of a miracle, I could the sit in November for a new test.
What happened then for most candidates this very day? Major computer problems, fatal errors, reboot.
I found my second score was very strange: a very high score in reading (I have never reached such a score even during practice); and a surprising low score in listening, too. I wouldnt have thought it could perhaps be a mistake if the conditions during this test would have been OK.
ETS official I got on the phone certified my score, of course. Can we blame her?
Both of my scores (I didn't have the choice) must have been sent by LSAC (which effectively received it from ETS on a regular basis) to the LS Im applying to.
After having read your post, I told myself I did not receive any paper score report, neither.
The thing is that maybe, by using LSAC services, some problems are avoided. I really dont know. Did you use LSAC?
Cheers,

I also applied through LSAC and my scores were received by them about fours days after I orderered. I think that LSAC receives the scores elletronIcally (the universities receive them by mail), and that ETS sends them a package every two weeks. So that, the Toefl score always reach LSAC between one day and two weeks after the order.

That's correct pnb.

So I finally decided to pay a second time for additional score reports.
And this time the Universities are starting to receive my scores.
ETS is just an extortionist!

NB: I didn't use Lsac either.

yeah I want to blame ETS too. I took a Toefl IBT test in early October last year but I haven't received my official score report by mail. they said a report was sent on October 27, 2006 and all I can do just wait for it. I kinda worry whether my score report already reached the schools.

Then you should check. And you should check with the schools. ETS sent me by mail a confirmation that everything was sent weeks/months before, while no school had received anything. So you should not trust ETS.

By the way, when ETS send a score report to the test taker, no date is mentioned on the enveloppe. Very useful for them: so we cannot see when the report was actually sent. Well done ETS!
