CBT toefl v. IBT toefl

acar

Hello,

As you know, the Toefl has completely changed. It became another exam which is Internet Based Toefl. My question is:
I had my toefl score when the toefl was still computer based. I'm planning to apply to US universities for LLM degree in December 2007 (2008-2009 educational period). Does anybody know if the universities will be accepting computer based toefl scores at that time? Do I absolutely have to take the Internet Based Toefl?

Thanks a lot..

It depends when you sat for the TOEFL !

TOEFL results are only valid 2 years

it does n't matter if it is CBT or IBT...IBT still has not been introduced in some countries. what matters is that your TOEFL score (which you send to the law school) should not be older than 2 years from the time you took the test.

IBT is much more difficult than CBT, longer articles, longer conversations.
And speaking part is also difficult especially for those who have bad accent.

I definetly agree with you, the IBT is much more hader than the CBT TOEFL.

Check Amazon.com: TOEFL IBT by Kaplan...good to prapare it

I've taken the IBT a few weeks ago. My score: 109/120.

I can't tell if the IBT is any harder than previous test formats. I haven't taken the CBT or PBT. Yet from my experience it wasn't easy.
It is more a problem of concentration than language abilities.

The test took about 4 hours. It started at 6 pm and lasted therefore until 10 pm. In my opinion much too late in the day.

The worst thing about it was the speaking part, although I consider myself a good speaker.
1. I was in a computer lab together with about 30 people. All of a sudden everyone starts speaking. It's hard to concentrate on your own stuff.
2. The questions are very vague. You have 15 seconds to prepare your answer and 45 seconds to talk. It's hard to come up with a good answer to an imprecise question.

Don't buy Kaplan's IBT book. It is flawed. I worked with it. E.g. multiple choice questions where the correct answer isn't a possible choice.
I guess the book was done too quickly to adapt to the new IBT.
