llm or jd?

karollss

Hi my names is Karolline and I just started in law school here in Brazil. And I decided that after I finish the law school here I gonna go to USA and study there, but the problem is: I don't know what is the best thing for me to do, I mean if I stay in USA to work as a lawyer would be better for be to do a jd or llm? Considering time x money, I guess that the best thing for me is to do a llm, am I right? My plan is to live in NYC, do you know how hard would be for me to get a job with a llm?
Thanks, I'll be waiting for answers.

Hello, you cannot practice law in the USA unless it is a JD second, you have to pass the Bar Exam in the state you want to practice in.
LLM,LLB, are not considered 'real' law degrees in the Unites States, for lack of a better word, you cannot practice law. You can work at a law firm but not as a lawyer.

The big difference is in the education, the structure. For starters the years is different. A JD takes 3 years to complete, while most LLM are only 1 to 2 years of study. Also, LLM are focused on theory but not practice. It is more on academics rather than litigation or practice. It doesn't prepare you law practice. LLM are best if you want to pursue a career teaching.
