LLM - Letter of Recommendation

DD1991

Hi,

I am looking to start applying for academic session 2022-2023 this year - UK and USA. How soon can i start collecting my letters of recommendation.... can I start obtain them from my referrers as early as March.

Also, in case my referrer leaves the post they are currently occupying prior to submission of the application, will the letter still hold good?

Thanks
D

You can collect them whenever you want, but most of the better unis will require that the referees send them the references themselves (for integrity reasons). In practice, that means that you often can't get references sorted before you start your application around October or so. It shouldn't matter where the referee currently is working, although it is often a requirement that the reference comes from a professional and not personal email.

Thanks! But since i'm applying through LSAC, can I send them in advance and assign them as and when applications are opened?

Yes, you can. Also, you can always choose to have your referees submit "generic" letters or addressed to specific universities. Good luck!
