llm guidence

Hi,
I needed to know about the job opportunities in the states. I have done my M.com [business management] , LLB from [Mumbai university] India in 2011. I have been practicing on criminal side for past 1 year.
I am planning to pursue my LLM in IPR from the US in 2013.
Also guide me about the job opportunities and prospects apart from working in a law firm after my degree eg {working in companies , IT industries, Non-profit organisation etc}
Do , I have to clear the bar exam for it .

Will my M com degree help me in US by any chance for gaining a job.

Hi Harsha !
As mentioned earlier , I have received a admit from Maurer school of law Bloomington Indiana university . I would like to know about the job opportunities after LLM in Criminal law or IPR which one would be better in securing a job in the US. I am an M com , LLB from Mumbai. I have also applied to GOLDEN GATE UNIVERSITY SAN FRANCISCO which one is better .

To be able to practice criminal law in the US you will need to pass a bar exam of the respective state where you wish to practice. In order to sit for a bar exam, you will likely have to jump through some hoops to make sure that your LL.B. suffices. The respective bar will likely need to verify that our foreign law degree is both durationally and substantively equivalent to a program of study at an approved law school in the United States. Given that India is based on the common law system, and the LL.B. is very much equivalent to the J.D., I don't think you would have too much of a problem becoming eligible to sit for a bar exam here in the U.S.

Now, as far as the job prospects go, that can be tough. The legal job market in the U.S. has been and continues to be abysmal. It is a simple matter of supply grossly outweighing the demand. There are simply too many attorneys and not enough jobs to absorb them. Now, in the area of criminal law, it is a tad better, as many people are not interested in criminal law, but it is still not easy getting a job with a firm, public defender's or prosecutor's office. With criminal law though, it is a lot easier to start your own firm and get business, as there are plenty of criminals about. My feeling is an LL.M. will not improve your chances for landing a firm job (and getting a government job will be difficult as, I am assuming, you are not a US citizen) but Indiana may assists in finding some internships, which may lead to a job. Golden Gate is NOT a good law school.

Thank's a lot Tristan & Harsha for your guidance and reply However , I have also received an admit from the Golden gate university for LLM in the US Legal studies. I plan to opt for the golden gate more because of its location ie san francisco and california promising larger job opportunities and good weather and of course the silicon valley nearby. As if one wishes to work in the US then he must have a overview of the US legal system. I had planned to pursue my LLM in IP as it was one of my specialization in my law school days in India but after research found out that to find a job in the US in IP sector one needs to have a science or engineering background so here the only option remaining with me is to complete a concentration in IMMIGRATION LAW or to complete a general LLM opting for various ELECTIVE COURSES of which i 'll be more interested in Criminal law.
1)What is the scope for llm in us legal studies with concentrations in Immigration law and the job opportunities ?
2) what would you suggest about studying criminal law and immigration both as electives?
3) As tomorrow if i am force to come back to India on not finding and practise then again i ll b practising in criminal law.WHAT is the scope for immigration law in california as US is know to be a land of immigrants ?

Golden Gate is NOT a good law school, not good at all. I would honestly not go to Golden Gate even if they offered me a full scholarship.

Tristan, why you say that it is not a good school?

It just does not have a good reputation. When US News had tiers, Golden Gate was consistently in the bottom fourth tier. US News is not everything but, in general, Golden Gate does not have what I would call an good reputation. I am sure that there are some outstanding teachers that teach at Golden Gate, and San Francisco offers a lot of opportunities for law students, and perhaps the top students from Golden Gate do find jobs, but there are a ton of schools in California alone - Berkeley, UCLA, Stanford, Davis, Hastings, USC, Loyola, Santa Clara, San Diego, Pepperdine, Pacific, Southwestern - that are ahead of Golden Gate law.

But getting a job matters a lot in the US after completing my LLM . I am aware that the school does not have a good ranking but then the location also matters. However i would like to ask you about the scope and job opportunities after LLM in immigration law in the US .
2] Should i do a concentration in immigration and then take criminal law as an elective will that help ?
3] Or should i go for corporate law what would you sugess ?

Golden Gate University has a very good law school. It doesn't have the money to compete with some of the large institutions. Still, it was ranked "Best LLM Program in Calif" by the Recorder (ahead of Berkeley, Hastings, and Stanford) legal newspaper; in the top 10 LLM Tax programs in the country by TaxTalent, in the top 20 in the country for practical training by National Jurist, and #11 in the country for diversity by US News & World Report. The professors are all phenomenal and of course it is in San Francisco!!!
