Best LLM in Corporate law

Hello, I am an Indian qualified lawyer, pursuing Company Secretaryship course with special interest in Corporate law. After a few years of experience in Indian corporate sector, I intend to pursue LLM in Corporate Law so as to widen and deepen my understanding of international business culture.

So, could anyone suggest me some renowned LLM programs in Corporate Law provided by world's reputed Universities (with special reference to US and UK)? Moreover, some valuable practical insights relating to job opportunities in the corporate legal world post qualifying LLM would be highly appreciated.

Yours sincerely,

In the US, universities with top business schools are generally a safe bet for business/corporate law. So schools like UPenn, Harvard, NYU, Stanford, Columbia, Michigan, Berkeley, Texas, Northwestern, UCLA, are schools that I would aim for. That being said, as a international student, an LL.M. in corporate law will not necessarily give you a heads up on the competition to be honest, even from an elite school. A JD, with good grades, from a law school like NYU would, but an LL.M. is generally only icing on the cake for those who already have a JD, and top grades, from a top notch law school. The legal job market in the US is quite brutal these days, the supply of newly minted attorneys grossly outweighing the demand. In other words, not enough jobs to absorb the glut of attorneys, and especially in areas like M&A, Corporate, commercial transactions, etc. These are the most desirable areas, as they tend to pay the most, and therefore the competition is super stiff. You would be better off pursuing some sort of a business degree instead, an MBA, a degree in accounting, etc.

Hello Tristan, thank you for your valuable suggestion regarding my query. I absolutely agree with your opinion that entry into the US legal market for a foreign qualified attorney post LLM is relatively slim. Infact, I have come to know that US law firms are not at all interested in recruiting an LLM graduate. However, an LLM in taxation might be of some relevance to grab a job in the taxation department of a firm.

On the contrary, MBA is perceived to be a much sought after degree pertaining to the business world. Well, here I would like you to know a few facts about my academic background so as to enable you to provide me with some better suggestions.
1/ I have completed my graduation in law (B.A.LL.B.) from a non-elite law school with a mediocre percentage of upper second class. After graduation, I have qualified the All India Bar Examination (AIBE) conducted by the Bar Council of India (BCI) which enables me to practice law anywhere in India. Now, I am undergoing a professional degree (Company Secretaryship) which grooms students as corporate legal experts that is perceived in high esteem in Indian corporate legal world.

2/ After proposed completion of the degree by 2016, I intend to start working in Indian corporate law firms for a couple of years so as to get first hand experience in the legal market.

3/ Next, I have a desire to be qualify as an attorney in the New York bar for which an LLM in Corporate law from an elite law school would provide me entry to appear in the New York Bar examination. But, owing to slim or no job prospects post LLM has deepened a feeling of fear in me to pursue my dream. What would you suggest?

4/ Finally, from a practical perspective, I guess pursuing MBA from an elite US business school would fulfill three criterias for long term success, namely- a/ to hone practical entrepreneurial business skills to survive in the corporate world, b/ international marketability and c/ to grab jobs in a global perspective including US and India.

Query: If I intend to pursue MBA from an elite business school like Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, NYU do I have a chance to get into one of those owing to my academic grades and qualifications? If so, how much could an MBA cost including tuition fees, accomodation and other academic areas? Is there any scholarships/ financial help for international students?

I hope you would be kind enough to go through my post and provide me with some better and effective suggestions.

Sincere regards,
shining_star.
