Hi Guys,
I am an advocate from India, practicing in Gujarat High Court...
I am interested in pursuing an LLM course in Intellectual property law or International finance/international law from any of the following universities:-
UCL,
Edinburgh,
KCL,
LSE.
To me, what matter most are the prospects of employability after the completion of LLM program. Could any one give any inputs as regards to the best university from the perspective of employment prospects.
Any other good universities in the Uk or other European Countries for the aforementioned programs?

Hi
I would say that the LLM will not guarantee a job in the UK. The economy is grim at the moment and the LLM has never been recognized as a valuable law degree in the UK. IP is difficult as a prospect and finance is even worse at the moment.
The reputation of UK LLMs is better abroad and offers better prospects outside of the UK. But do not take everything I say at face value. You can be lucky and with a qualification as a UK solicitor (after passing the QLTT) you may increase your chances.
You can also sell the fact that you may help a UK firm get into the Indian legal market (something most international UK firms are dreaming of).
UK LLMs are interesting and an invaluable enriching experience but they may not pay back immediately. It may be a long term benefit to your carreer.
I would say that Oxbridge is always better if you can get in. London colleges are good but do not provide the same 'brand' effect.

Hii Koala
I am much obliged to have valuable information from you. I have already obtained Certificate of eligibiligy from SRA, UK and would soon be sitting for QLTT.
Could you just elaborate the following excerpt from the information given by you:-
"you can also sell the fact that you may help a UK firm get into the Indian legal market (something most international UK firms are dreaming of)."
How, being an individual practitioner, could I lure a foreign firm?
What are the priorities of British firms and what are the problems faced by them. I guess, the foreign firms could enter the indian legal market soon or later, as the Chief Justice of India has expressed his view that there shall not be any problems, if the foreign firms are given permission to enter the Indian Legal market.

Hi ravishdbhatt
At the moment UK law firms are busy at home but when growth comes back hopefully later this year they will be interested again in India.
My understanding was that you were from India. If you have connections there in the legal sector and know Indian law, you could be very useful for UK firms thinking about entering the potentially huge market of India.
If you were dual qualified, I think that it would definitely be a plus. To enter a market you need to understand it. You could help them do that and serve as a 'cutural interface'.
It is not a very usual way of approaching firms but one has to think out of the box. I would aproach huge UK firms and medium sized ones who could potentially be interested to export their services to India. Sometimes smaller international firms are interested to put in place international networks. You could do just this and sell the fact that you will contact Indian law firms and put in place a network of trusted friends there. That's just an example.
Hope that helps.
