Best LL.M. for IP & IT Law?

Hello everyone!

I am currently in search for my second LL.M. which I would like it to be on IP & IT Law - or simply IP Law, but with a strong emphasis on the interplay between IP Law and Technology. My first LL.M. was on EU Law & Market Integration at Maastricht University (great programme btw - I would highly recommend it!), so I am already quite familiar with EU IP Law and Data Protection. Therefore, I would like my second LL.M. to be even more advanced.

I have heard that the programmes provided by KU Leuven, the University of Edinburgh and the MIPLC in Munich have an excellent reputation in terms of IP and IT Law. Is there anyone who has graduated from these programmes and has the kindness to share their experience?

Also, are there any other programmes which I should consider applying for?

Any advice would be of great help! Thank you very much in advance!

I can’t say which LLM is the best. I guess you would have to study in all of them in order to be able to compare But there are also a few good IP/IT LLM programs in Germany, e.g. in Göttingen University or TU Dresden. As far as I know, compared to many Dutch or Belgian programs (like Tilburg or Leuven), class sizes in Germany are much smaller, which usually means better opportunities for questions, discussions and other kinds of interactivity.

Schools with strong technical backgrounds / heritages are good choices. The University of Edinburgh for example. That WIPO program is also rather unique although it probably won't have the same tech-focus as the programs you are looking at. Very solid for IP law / antitrust curriculum though.

Small versus large class sizes can be a trade-off though. Smaller classes mean less potential for networking and typically less dynamism. I really wouldn't use class size as a deciding factor - focus more on each program's curriculum and faculty and see which might suit you better in these respects.
