There are a variety of llm fernstudium - distance learning programs. In Germany you will find llm fernstudium programs at FU Berlin, FernUni Hagen, TU Kaiserslautern, Ruhr Uni Bochum and at Carl von Ossietzky Uni Oldenburg. They offer different subjects. What specialization of a distance learning LLM program are you interested in?

Fredyier thanks for your response. I am looking into a distance learning LLM in business / corporate law. Do you know what costs I expect for an online course?

Hi llm-parttime,
Prices differ greatly and not all LLM programs (LLM Fernstudium) are accredited.
FU Berlin charges 8.000 per year plus semester fees.
Costs for an llm fernstudium in Kaiserslautern amount to only 880e per semester plus an additional fee of 93. Considering you finish your LLM Fernstudium in one and a half years, it sums up to only 2.919. Exam fees apply as well 500.
The Master of law at Fernuni Hagen is rather expensive with 7200 for 3 semester although you may receive a 25% reduction.

Hi llm-parttime,
Prices for distance learning programs differ greatly in length and costs. The University of London for instance, requires participation in 16 modules spread over one to five years of study and charges around 7,840 pounds (about 9,838 Euros). The cost is estimated between 400 and 1000 euros per semester average at many foreign universities. Hope it helps.

Thanks for the information on the cost. Does anyone know if there is a rating system for distance learning, a type classification / ranking or how do I know if they are any good? Does anyone have experience at the mentioned universities, of which he can report? Is any distance learning program accredited? I'm unsure if an LLM fernstudium is worthwhile.

I am not aware of a ranking scheme for distance learning programmes. I have seen an overview of online courses at bloomberg business but its slightly outdated. Distance learning sounds like a great alternative if you have constraints like earning money buit if you have a choice I'd rather opt for part-time LLM studies. It is more respected. You have to be very careful with your choice as not each University is accredited and if you consider taking the bar, distance learning programs are not always accepted.

Thanks for your advice Hannahw. How long does an LLM by distance learning generally last? Are there any time restrictions or can I take as much time as I need going through online studies?

Fernstudium for the Master of Laws takes an average of between four to eight semesters. Partially, longer studying periods are on offer, such as at the University of London, where distance learning can go up to five years.

What are the prerequisites for an LLM Fernstudium. Do I need work experience or can I go straight on from degree studies?

An LLM by distance learning requires the same as if you study full or part time. Minimum requirements are generally a law degree, at least a year work experience and some Universities require an interview or qualifying examination. Other than that you have the usual application process with a handing in a statement and co. Specific requirements for an LLM by distance learning you best check with your University of interest.
