Hi,
I am currently finishing my Political Science degree in BC (I am a BC resident). I am then planning on going to the UK to take the LLB Senior Status at a University there. Once back in Canada, I need to transfer my credentials and receive a Certificate of Qualification by the NCA, which will include 7 exams (Principles of Canadian Administrative Law, Canadian Constitutional Law, Canadian Criminal Law and Procedure, Foundations of Canadian Law, and 3 others). This can be done at an institution or through self study.
Well, I just came across the UBC LLM Common Law program which allows you to fulfill your NCA requirements while completing an LLM CL degree.
http://www.law.ubc.ca/files/pdf/graduate/LLMCL_guidelines.pdf
I have a few questions for anyone that can answer it:
1. Is the LLM CL program looked down upon? as in it does not hold the same level of importance as a regular LLM because its designed for LLB holders from abroad?
2. Is it worth coming to UBC and spending $28,000.00+ for this degree in LLM CL? or the one at UoT called the The Global Professional Master of Laws (GPLLM)?
3. How important is an LLM in the work field? and/or in search of articling?
4. Would it be better to fill the NCA requirements on my own, then applying for LLM program at UBC or somewhere else?
5. Or perhaps doing my LLB and LLM in the UK and coming back here to fill my NCA requirements here? (unfortunately I would still have to do the 7 exams once back)
6. Does an LLM really matter?
7. What are my chances at getting in a PHD program if my LLM specifically has Common Law after it or GPLLM?
Sorry for all the questions, if you can answer them or any of them I would greatly appreciate it!

Hello,
I am a Canadian (25 year old) student, entering my final year of the LLB @ the University of Manchester, in the UK.
I must say the experience has been amazing!
I am considering coming back next year (2014) and entering the LLM CL at UBC or at York.
In talks with other indivduals and professionals, they say that it is a new degree, so the recognition amongst the law firms is not as high yet, however, I see it as, I am going to have to do 7 exams regardless, why not hit the 7 exams, and earn an LLM whilst doing it?
If you have any questions, feel free to msg me or however it works on this site!
Cheers,
JD
