Why NY Bar Exam? Not any other?

Hi!

I am just curious to know why most LLM graduates go for NY Bar and not any other bar in the US? Is it simply because of job opportunities? Thanks!

Only a few states (I believe New York, California, and Massachusetts, though I may be missing one or two, and you may be able to waive into the Washington DC bar after being admitted in one of the above) allow foreign graduates to take the bar exam, even with an LLM. Most people focus on New York because it is a more "prestigious"/international legal market than Boston, LA or San Francisco.

I agree with Charles. Also, the NY bar seems to be easier than California.

Here's a good overview on the US bar exam: http://www.llm-guide.com/article/407/us-bar-exam-faq

I wouldn't say it's easier, per se. There are fewer restrictions on taking the California bar exam (e.g., fewer restrictions on foreign law graduates, students from unaccredited law schools can take the California bar, etc.)

opportunity explains a lot. the new york legal market is the biggest in the US, one of the most lucrative in the world, and manhattan's not exactly an unpleasant place to live..
