@ Nacho "Is the English course starting on the 1st of July? I haven´t been required to take it but I would like it, and according to the email that NUS sent me it´s commencing on 11, July. "
what course Nacho???
Ayeshia. Some people, at least from the IBL programme, have been required to read an Intensive English Course during their stay in Singapore. But I guess if you don´t know about it you haven´t been required to take it :)
I think I´ll take the IEC course, which focus on legal writing.

I got acom at UTown too. My first choice was one of those married apartments, i was hoping they would have a few left over from the newly constructed ones :), but no.. got a AC single room instead.. I'm gonna confirm it; if I find something super then i'll just forfeit the $200.. But this apartment searching is so frustrating! with the scammers and the people just showing you absolute crap for exorbitant prices, i am just about done! I was thinking maybe live on campus the first semester, and then maybe rent a room for the second even? I just wish the rules at uni weren't so strict.. I went for my undergrad in England and I don't have to live by 'rules' now.. so, the whole idea of curfew and lights out and leaving your room ajar if someone from the opposite sex is in your room is bizarre! I swear that last one is actually on the rules list, i just hope they aren't hell bent on these..
Anyone had luck with apartment hunting/flat mate searching? Not applicable if you are staying at Evans and SIC :)
Just about two months to go now..
Did you get your solar confirmation pages? I got mine yesterday..

Take it from a Singaporean, sometimes the rules are for show. We just like listing out rules even though we don't really follow them. I lived on campus for a time when I was in university and I never remember ever leaving my room ajar just because someone from the opposite sex was in. Seriously, its not like they have police walking around at night to make sure you follow the rules.

Hi all
I've been following the discussion during the application process and now also joining here. I have accepted place in Maritime Law as well and now my accommodation offer is pending (have been offered singe room ap with AC in utown). Not sure about the rules; I am not very keen of staying in a place which, according to the rules, seems more like a prison than a uni accommodation :). However, since someone else is also concerned about the issue, I believe that students staying there are not that strict with everything.. I don't know. Probably will accept the offer. Hopefully roommates will be kind of similar with me..
I am btw from the northern countries, working in the shipping industry and have been graduated Master of Laws a few years ago. Nice to meet ya all soon!

in utown , having a single room means that you have to share an apartment with other people and do not have your own bathroom/kitchen?
Posted Jun 07, 2011 05:58
Yup, 4 single rooms make up the apartment, shared kitchen/living/dining/bathroom. Your rooms looks like it has a bed/desk/wardrobe.
I confirmed my accom at Utown but I'm stil looking out for a place to stay. Got the Solar page details and now just getting about filling everything up.

You will be doing courses together with the undergrads. Trust me the workload will not be light.

I think you need also a separate working permit if going to have a part time job..? Not allowed to work with the student pass. I am not sure but this is what I understood from the websites of immigration and checkpoints authority. About the accom.in utown: I assume that roommates will be same gender? It is not explicitly informed anywhere..

one thing is seriously bothering me: when is the first portion of the tuition fee due to payment?
anyone has info about this?
anyone has info about this?

@ Fay: There is no need for a separate work permit to do a part time job during term period and full time job durig vacations. As per the ICA website, " Work Privileges for IHL Students
Under the Employment of Foreign Workers Act (Cap 91A, S4) Work Permit (Exemption) (Consolidation) Notification, foreign students studying in IHL are exempted from applying for a Work Permit if they wish to work during vacation time.
The exemption to apply for a Work Permit is also applicable to specific IHL students who do not work more than 16 hours per week during term time. Students are strongly advised to check under the relevant section of the Employment of Foreign Works Act on the work privileges granted to their institutions."
You can look at it in detail @ http://www.ica.gov.sg/page.aspx?pageid=325&secid=182

@ Imarkon: The first part of the tuition fees would be paid on the date of registration itself i.e. 27 - 28 July. Atleast that was what I unerstood from the mails and attachments sent by NUS.

@Amrapalli: Amrapalli, what would be the initial fee commitment. From what I have read the fee would be taken semester wise. Does this mean we have to pay S$ 5000.

@ Imarkon: You need to pay half of your total fees during the time of registration. The second half would be paid during the start of the second semester. I guess that would be sometime around December or early January.
