not sure why you bother with cuhk?
it doesn't have a proven record in the market place. if i were you, i would take my investment elsewhere.

Don't listen to Poonchoy. People at CUHK get good jobs at top firms. It's a young school but got a great reputation.

Maybe HNS works for CUHK.... =P It is also funny coz he himself is applying to NYU and other US schools.

@Yskywalker: Honestly, I think you should do more research. I beg to differ that the graduates of CUHK Law get good jobs. Ask the school to give you employment statistics and all will be apparent. I know at least 2 friends from the mainland who went there for their LLM under the belief that they could continue to stay and work in Hong Kong. They sent out hundreds of CVs and the typical response was 'You do not fit our firm profile' or 'We cannot consider you because you are not qualified in Hong Kong'. The LLM does not allow you to qualify in Hong Kong and even if you somehow manage to get around this, the firms are reluctant to employ from local schools. Those who get into the better firms (especially international ones) have their LLMs from the US or the UK. So, taking it all in, why not spend the money somewhere you can get better returns?

Actually, I was merely commenting on Poonchoys attacks on the school as a whole, in this forum and another, which I found to be unreasonable. I don't care what school he was referring to in Hong Kong, as, to the best of my knowledge (which I'll admit isn't particularly great in this area as I am not a graduate of either), all three real law schools in HK are at least relatively similar in quality standards.

The key point I was trying to make is that this thread was started by someone who was just seeing if anyone else was accepted to meet fellow classmates, not asking about jobs or anything else LLM related. To answer the statement CUHK isn't proven in the marketplace, this is a complete lie as I know plenty people who graduated there now with good jobs, as well as from CityU and HKU--unless he considers a good job to have a salary comparable to Li Ka Shing. Therefore, I found it inappropriate to bash the school unnecassarily.

It is true that the LLM will not get you qualified in Hong Kong, and therefore some deep considerations must be made in whether to invest in such a program. However, although this applies to some students, you can't assume everyones personal circumstances. Maybe yskywalker did a JD in the U.S., and is already qualified there and merely wants to study an LLM in China for personal reasons-- without a care about qualification, for which, CUHK, in my opinion, wouldn't necessarily be a horrible choice if he understands the pros and cons of doing an LLM in Hong Kong (which I hope he would have researched). But, once again this is all unknown.

Ultimately, start a new thread if you need on the prospects of getting a job in HK after an LLM or your hate for a particular school. Whatever the point is, skywalker was probably already a student at CUHK by the time poonchoy said that anyway. Peace.

hi,

Anybody with experience of living in HK? What is the average cost of living for a student there? No campus, shared studio. Thanx
