2010 Decisions

Same. They didn't give me any financial aid either. My university in Pakistan is actually offering me a scholarship to do my LLM from Europe, all tuition paid, with a monthly stipend Iof a 1000 Euros. I actually didnt want to take it up, but my teachers insisted. Anyway, I asked Toronto to reconsider giving me financial aid this year and also told them about the Europe offer (In hindsight i dont think that was a good idea). I'm actually a Canadian citizen (kinda funny when you think about it- a Canadian who has never been to Canada), so their reply was basically that you're already only paying around $7000, compare that to the $23,500 that International students are paying. Still, it worries me because I really dont have that much money, and I know my parents are very supportive, but i dont want to burden them. I won't take up a loan, because i dont want to pay the interest, and I don't know how i will pay it back since I won't be staying in Canada after my LLM. How much tuition do they charge US citizens?

I would take the Europe offer, depending on the school of course. Factoring in living costs that's probably like a $30,000 difference, minimum.

However, UofT does not offer much aid and $7k really is a great deal for a 12-month program. Were you going to do the course-based or thesis-based program (as you probably get more "value" at UofT for the course-based program)?

Charles - I see you also recently got into Dal, congrats! It's odd though that their tuition is higher than UofT's considering the prestige/quality of the programs.

Zomba - Thanks! The funny thing about Dal is that while its tuition is higher for Canadian citizens, it's substantially lower for international students - about $15k rather than $24k. Toronto is by far the most expensive of the Canadian schools for international students. Sadly, despite the fact that my friends and coworkers have bestowed upon me "honorary Canadian" status, it doesn't actually come with a tuition break... So I'm really hoping to see some sort of funding from Toronto, even if it's just a differential fee waiver.

Zomba, the European universities on my scholarship don't have a good ranking. The only one I'd consider out of the list they've given me is Vrije, because they offer International Law and it's in Brussels. However, my area of interest is actually a cross between constitutional and corporate law. Since, due to some unforeseeable problems, i couldnt go to Toronto last year, i ended up enrolling in LLM Family Law..so technically, if i end up writing 3 thesis proposals in 2 years, I will loose my sanity, and i dont even like International law- you get my drift, don't you? So, at the end Toronto, despite the expenses, is really the best option. It's one of the best law schools in the world, and I value the quality of education I get, therefore, I'm still taking it up.

Also, i chose the course-based program.

Cara - I had one of each - one referee submitted online and the other by mail. It took about two business weeks after my status changed to "under review" to get a decision by email and then snail mail (don't trust the SGS system as it lists my application as "under review" even though I got accepted two weeks ago!

Zomba1, are you from US like Charles or do you have an LLB from a Canadian or US university? I am asking because I noticed that you received an offer very soon after completing your application and I understood from the other posts that north American or English graduates are evaluated faster...

Cara, I am a North American applicant so maybe that's why I heard so fast.

Out of curiousity, has anyone heard from Osgoode yet? I've now heard back from everywhere else I've applied in Canada.

I'm from Ukraine. Yesterday I inquired the UofT about status of my application. They promptly responded that my application has been reviewed and is on hold (a common practice, as they say).

Guys, could somebody please explain to me what does it mean when an application is put on hold? Does it mean they are inclined to refuse? or this is a 'common practice' for applicants from countries other then Canada, the USA, the UK or Australia?

Thanks!
