Work in US after LLM

peggyw77

Hi guys,
Congratulaitons to all who get their dream admissions! Best wishes for those who are still waiting.

I have no real work experience at all except that I worked as RA&TA at college (LLB). Is it almost impossible for me to get a job in US after completion of my LLM in NYU?
Any opinions are appreciated...thanks.

i have no idea bout that because i've had no work experience as such either and i am also wondering what are the chances of getting a good job in america after i complete my LLM from Columbia....because i'll be taking a loan to finance myself there and i'll have to pay it off as quickly as possible. Also i'm wondering do most people who go to Columbia, NYU etc take loans or do most finance themselves in the LLM program

I spoke to a few friends who are Columbia Alumni and they said that LLM's do face a problem as JD's are preferred by law firms. When my freind graduated from Columbia in 2001, she said that that year since the economy was bad they had a problem.

She says things may be different. If anyone knows people from LLM class of 2004 from Columbia or NYU it is best to ask them.

Columbia's statistics on employment rates in the US for their outgoing students has been updated only till 2002 for NYU admitted students the CD sent with the admissions packet contains statistics for several years and that could be helpful. The NYU website for admitted students also allows us to request for alumni to contact us to answer our queries. This is also my main area of concern

so say i do my LLM in International Law and keep it general, what do you think would be the chances of getting a job at the United Nations or any other international Organization.

I think the difficulties for LLMs to get hired in US come mostly from the VISA and competition from JDs.

If you want to work for international organizations such as UN, the VISA problem will be less a concern (as long as you are from an UN member state). However, I think organizations also perfer people with more experiences. Besides, some professors told me that competition for organization jobs are high too. But in general, if you do very well on your internatioanl law LLM (have some publications will be even better), getting a job from organizations should be not as hard as from law firms.

These are just my personal opinions, please correct me or add something that you think I missed.
