What are my chances?

I am A Law Graduate from India scoring among top ten Ranks in a batch of more than 200 people in my University and scoring a total of 61% marks. After that I have done Post Graduate Diploma Courses in Intellectual Property Laws and Cyber Laws and also have a varied work Experience of 3years in Law Firm and also as an associate with various lawyers.

I want to pursue LLM in Intellectual Property Laws from a top University in US. Can You Pl. Tell me about the chances I Have if I apply. and also about the institutes in which i should apply to?

Thanks

Apply! that is the answer to your question, everyone is different therefore everyone chances are different, if you can put together a good story as to what you plan on benefiting from the program, you should not have any problems although you will be competing with other Indians for limited spaces so be inventive, but do not bore them with stories of becoming a great IP lawyer they have heard it all before.

Only apply to the top 10 schools they are the only ones worth going to.

I am a UK law graduate I have done my LPC and I am taking the NY Bar in February 2007 and I am presently working as a paralegal in the 3rd top US firm in London and I have about 3 yrs legal work experience too. I am only applying to Harvard, Yale and Columbia.

I wish all the best of luck. Some once told me your imagination is the only limitation to your success. Good luck!

well i would still like to make an informed decision as to in what kind of institutes should i apply so as to maximise my chances of getting admission.

Also, please note that I want to apply in a law school which is best suited for a good job placement as well, as I belong to the category of Foreign law Graduates

I think you should be more concrete about where you want to work. Admittedly, if we're talking about associate positions in law firms, then it matters a lot if you're from Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Columbia or NYU, or a handful of the other top schools.

However, if you're intent on a specific region, then the national rankings people here obsess over may not matter as much. New York, for example, has hometown favorites other than Columbia and NYU.

In the end, getting a job depends not on your school's pedigree or your grades (but they sure as hell help), but on your strength in networking, self-projection, and old-fashioned legwork. Regardless of the historical LLM hiring trend in your chosen university, there are ways to skew the odds, and these require a different aspect of intelligence.
