US LLM after Canadian LLM?

martell

I am currently completing a Canadian LLM. I am thinking about applying for a US LLM in the future. I know that having a US LLM often bars you from getting a second LLM. I am wondering if having a Canadian LLM will negatively affect my chances or even bar me from applying to some tier 1 US schools (Harvard/Yale/ etc) for an LLM? Will it help, or generally have no effect?

Thanks

Having a first LLM in the US does not bar you on obtaining a second. I don't know where did you hear that but its not true.

Some schools do not consider people with a US LLM but other schools simply don't care. I do know some people who have two LLM's in the US. For example Vanderbilt and the University of Texas consider candidates with an LLM in the US.

Before making that statement approach the school you are interested or have a look at the FAQ's on the LLM section of that particular school.

Hey. You are quite right, my statement is too generic.

I know that Harvard has a problem with it (http://www.law.harvard.edu/prospective/gradprogram/llm/eligibility/index.html)

I'm still trying to find about Yale or Columbia's policy though. Other than than these top 3, I'm not really interested in going to the trouble of doing a 2nd US LLM.

Good!

I am quite sure Columbia does not allow it as well. NYU is one of the schools that allows it as well as Boston!

But since you are doing a Canadian LLM I am sure that won't be a problem.
