Hi guys, what do you think: Would you join UCLA or BU to pursue a Master of Laws?

I mean, has anyone been accepted to these schools? If so, why did you choose them?

I've been admitted to BU's Banking LLM and waitlisted by UCLA.
Chose BU because they seem to have one of the best Banking and Financial LLMs and enjoys a very good reputation back home.
Applied to UCLA because of the USNEWS ranking, quality of life and study in LA, just to try out a west coast school and ... because my brother lives there!

Fees and costs of living seem to be about the same. Concerning job opportunities afterwards it might actually be better to join BU since it is located on the East Cost.

Dude, I am currently a LLM student in UCLA.
UCLA is great university. Depend your choice on what you want to do next. If you want to find a job take into consideration the rankings; because the firms do more or less. In addition check the career perspectives..
I do not know for BU, however I know for UCLA, and my opinion will not be subjective.
If you have specific questions ask VIc and the responsible person from BU. Check their answers and make your decision.

Kourt, good idea. How is the career service at UCLA?

In general the career office is helpful if you want to work in a firm. If you want to pursuit a SJD or JD then the case is different.
Regarding the career office we have great support and this year it is organized the first LL.M. Job fair in West Coast, similar to the LL.M. Job Fait at NYU.
If you want to work as a lawyer here there are several factors, very important.
Your nationality is important; if you are german or french or japanese for instance you can find easer a job because of the market request.
Then the ranking of your school is importan and thirdly your grades.
You will have opportunities, however it depends on your work. If you are good (with the sense of outstanding) they will not hesitate to hire you.

Hey man,
I have recently been accepted to UCLA and I am struggling to make up my mind as whether to go there or to Dubai where they are offerin me a nice job with a group of lawyers working for a company.
Anyways I have contacted Vic Telesino and he has given me all the info that the Uni can obviously disclose (very helpful indeed). Still I would like to hear from someone studyin there about the "real" employment possibilities...say I am from Argentina, I have scored really good grades in my previous education, I will study hard (ok make that quite hard haha). What are my perspectives on a job? could I get an 80k or 90k job when I graduate or should I be happy with something much lower than that.
Besides the employment possibilities let me hear all the things u think are useful to know as my deadline to make a desicion is approaching.
Thnks a lot

Hello HernanArg,
In LA there is a big latin community, so there are possibilities for work.
I can not predict your future here and I can not ensure you that you will find a job.
The only thing that I can say to you is that if you have good grades and you are motivated you have great chances to find a job with even more money.
regarding the option that you have to go to Dubai, it is a hard dilemma and I can find arguments for both directions..
Before making your desicion you have to give one answer to youself?.
Why did you apply for the LLM program?
This answer may give you the answer to your dilemma.

Hey Kourt thanks on the fast response, I ll be making up my mind for the next two days (TH and FR are weekends in the middle east so I ll have time to think it over). I don't know what I ll do but ur question though it might seem a little bit too philosophical is very good. The answer does not bring me to a solution as I applied to the LLM in order to acquire more knowledge and therefore be an interesting asset for some international company or big legal buffet. You should know that the situation for young lawyers in our country is not a very bleak (i dont knw if that is the correct word) as you d be surprised of what u get paid as a young professional in Argentina.
Anyways thnks again, and if I decide to make to UCLA I ll contact you to further me on some classes, acomodation and of course nite life issues.
