Summer Programs (Introduction to US law)

CanLaw

Hi,

I am a Canadian lawyer who wants to get an introduction to US Law. What are my options when it comes to Summer Programs in US Law Schools? Are there some that are better than others? Any advice?

Cheers,
Canadian lawyer

Hi Canada
I found this article useful
http://www.llm-guide.com/article/149/summer-law-programs
Also, there have been some discussions about summer school if you search the boards. Some courses are more focussed on legal 'english' which you may not need.

Thanks Ursula. Read the article and did some further research on the boards and the Internet about this. I'd probably be interested in either

Yale
http://www.yale.edu/eli/summer/law.html

or UC Davis
http://www.law.ucdavis.edu/internprogram/summer/orientation.shtml

Am I correct to think that Yale is more about legal 'english' whereas Davis is more about US Law?

I looked briefly at Yale - I had the impression there was a program run by the Yale English Language Institute. I didn't look further as I decided to do the Columbia/Leiden course in Amsterdam - its shorter (4 weeks) and in Europe (which for me is nice for a change), its also less expensive than the other courses.

I decided in the end to go to ILI's Intro course at DC (www.ili.org) The other one I liked was http://www.iuslaw.org but it didnt work out with my schedule.

These three programs (Columbia, ILI, and IUSLAW) all look interesting. I'll take some time to think about it since it is only for next year, thanks for the info. CanLaw

(edit)
BTW do Fulbright recipients have the opportunity to do such programs for free?

That's correct. I didn't do it but my friends who were Fulbrighters did a course in DC for a 3 weeks (I think). It just sounded like a good opportunity to meet people as opposed to be substantively useful.
