Stanford or Berkeley

Almost all rankings place Berkeley above Stanford for Intellectual Property. How strong is Stanford against Berkeley for Intellectual property?

I am tilting towards Stanford but am wondering if saying no to Berkeley is the right thing as rankings say otherwise.

I also replied to the initial inquiry.

I think Stanford would be better in terms of general reputation. However, as to the field of IP law, Berkeley has higher ranking and IP lawyers all know the fact.

Furthermore, living expense of Palo Alto is extremely high compared to that of Berkeley. And since Berkeley Law School has much more alumnus than Stanford in IP area, Berkeley seems to have merit in terms of network.

I acknowledge both schools are cool, however, if I were you, I'll select Berkeley as an IP lawyer. Thank you.

If you are concerned with rankings or reputations, I would say you should choose Stanford. Stanford has been ranked (in general terms) much higher than Berkeley, and this would not change in the future. While Berkeley is ranked 1st in the IP area (USNews), Stanford is also ranked 2nd in that area. I do not think the difference in the IP ranking does matter in light of the big difference in general rankings and the overall strong reputation of Stanford.

You should take US News specialty rankings with a pinch of salt. Unlike their general law school ranking, specialty rankings are based solely on peer assessment, not the full list of criteria that US News takes into account for the general rankings.
Both schools are very strong in IP, I would choose Stanford for the added value in reputation.
