I am applying to the LLM program in Columbia,NYU amongst others and I am really confused as to how I am meant to send in my letters of recommendation.What do they mean when they say it is preferred if you submit it electronically? Do I just send a form to my recommender and then he/she scans it back and sends it to me and then I just attach it to the main application form? Or do they have to mail it to the unis directly electronically?

If I am not wrong you can give the e-mail id of the person recommending you and he would recieve an e-mail notification with the form. There you can just copy paste the text you intend to include in your recommendation letter. That is how I applied to NYU two years back. Additionally you can take prints of the RL on your recommender's/college's letter head and attach it with a hardcopy of your form and put the same in a sealed envelope with the college's stamp across the seal.

When are the applications for Columbia opening for 2010-11?

What exactly do you mean copy paste the text? Does the recommender send it straight to the uni himself through email?
I think the Columbia applications are opening beginning of september.

a hard copy recommendation letter is actually not a problem. that's how i submitted my recommendation letters for nyu and columbia. you can just submit the reco letters together with your application package which will include your transcripts.
