question

Are graduates of Canadian LLMs competitive with graduates from the big US schools for professor positions at Canadian or American universities?

I think most Canadian LLM students go on to get PhDs (aka LLDs, SJDs) in order to compete- at least for Canadian appointments. If you check out the faculty pages for Canadian law schools you see that junior faculty either have a doctorate (or it is in progress) or have an LLM from the best schools internationally (Harvard, Yale, Oxbridge, etc). But I think it depends on so many factors. I have heard that publications are very important in getting a faculty appointment- if you have an LLM from a top Canadian school and some publications in leading journals then you might get lucky.

For a good overview of the US job market and appointment process check out http://www.lawschool.cornell.edu/faculty-pages/wendel/teaching.htm

Whoops- that link is not working. Try a Google search of the title "The Big Rock Candy Mountain: How to Get a Job in Law Teaching" written by Brad Wendel of Cornell. There are links to other blogs and websites that describe the qualifications needed to be a prof in the US.
