Preparing for getting into the top law schools

rahul400

Hi all,

I am from India.
I am currently in the first sem of my 5-year BALLB course.
My result in the qualifying exam for this course was very good.
In fact, with God's grace, I managed to secure the first position in my entire state.
However, my parents wanted me to stay in my home town due to the fact that I am blind and they therefore thought that it would be more suitable for me to stay near them.
As a result, the law school in which I am currently studying is the best in my city, but it's nowhere close to the best law schools in the country.

I want to work in the corporate sector after completing my education.
I really want to pursue the LLM course from a top law school in the world, preferably Harvard.

So, I would be extremely grateful if any of you would be kind enough to give me some tips which would enable me to improve my CV andin effect improve my chances of getting into the top law schools.

Which areas should I focus on in order to improve my chances?

Hello rahul400,

I'm also in the first semester of a law course and, like you, i want to pursue the LLM course from a top law school in the world, so i have been researching about it in this website for 6 months now and here are some tips for you:
-First of all, make sure to have excellent grades and try stay in the top 5% of your class.
-Second, write some articles and try to get them published by law reviews from the universities which you want to apply. It would be good if those articles were about the area that you want to study in your LLM
-Third, try to be part of some exchange program of your university and when choosing the university of your exchange, choose the best one available.
-Fourth, another good thing is to take part in a summer law course from a big university (e.g. Harvard, Yale, Oxford Cambridge, Kings College, LSE, Oxford). It would be good if that course were about the area which you want to study in your LLM.
-Fifth, see if there is any international law firm in your city and try to get an internship there. If not, try to get an internship from the most prestigious institution of your city
-Sixth, try to become teaching assistant from the subject which you want to study in your LLM.
-Seventh, try to work as a volunteer somewhere. (In my case, since i'm from Brazil, i'm enrolling to work as a volunteer in the 2014 football World Cup and i'll try to be a volunteer in the 2016 olympic games)
-Eighth, think of some project that is new to your country or region (e.g. me and my friends are founding the first junior enterprise from my state and the third from all the Northern region of Brazil) In another post someone said that he is trying to create a website to teach law in his country (I don't know if the laws of India allows that, but that would be a good idea.
- Ninth, i can see from your post that you are religious so pray, because getting into a LLM program from a top law school is an easy task, but, if you do all the things above or maybe something more, i think that you stand a good chance of getting admitted in at least one top law school from UK or USA.

Cheers from Brazil,
