Hi everybody,
I'm an Italian law student and I will be graduated in October or December 2010. I would like to take an LLM after my graduation (so in 2011/2012), before becoming a lawyer here, both because I want to have an experience abroad and also because I want at least to try to work in the US. The university where I would like to go is the UPenn. My grades at my law school are among the highest in the whole university, my GPA is 29.2/30, which is pretty high, and I will graduate with the maximum grade (110 with lode). Furthermore, my university (Roma3) has a lot of relationships with the UPenn, every year we have some UPenn students coming here, and I personally met a UPenn professor with whom I am in contact. Also, I am writing my final thesis on an American subject (the chapter 11 and the financial crisis). Yet, there is a very big problem, I do not have work experience. Here in Italy during the law school we do not have internships, and now it's too late to start one because I have to concentrate on the last exams I have to take and on my thesis. Which are my possibilities of getting in the UPenn without a serious resume but just with a good academic background? And in other schools (NYU, Cardozo..etc)? Thank you!
POSSIBILITY OF GETTING IN UPENN

I am going to Penn this year and I have never worked a day in my life! I graduate law school this summer. So you should have no bother, especially since your resume is so good.
Good luck!

You have to check the school's website, since I think that they requiere applicants to have the lawyer title (for you should be Avvocato). For what I recall, you need 2 years of work or practice beofore obtaining the title, right? In my country is difrferent, just requieres a thesis or an exam, but I remember hearing about that when I was in Italy. Also check LSAC, because there they have some common definitions of wht the title they require is called in several countries.
Good luck!

Hi everybody,
I'm an Italian law student and I will be graduated in October or December 2010.
Ciao nanolo,
I am an Italian student as well. I applied this year for a LL.M. in US.
I have a similar CV: graduated at University of Florence (cum laude) on "Choice of forum clauses in Europe", GPA of 29.5/30, no significant internship during the university.
The only differences with your situation is that I did an Erasmus (now L.L.P.) in Leicester, England (as, you can see, I am not saying "Oxbridge") and that, since I graduated in April '09, I started in the following September the italian legal practice (that I am currently doing). But when I will be leaving to US I will have completed only one year of practice, so it is not that much. Plus, I am not in any top-firm or international commercial firm.
I applied:
UPenn: admitted
Chicago: waitlisted
CLS: rejected
HLS: rejected
Berkeley: admitted
NYU: admitted
I will go to NYU.
The important things you can do is a great Personal Statment (take your time, it is not that simple for italian minds) and find good references from Professors who know you very well and who are known abroad.
If you have any question, feel free to ask - I will be glad to answer.
Before concluding, if it helps you in any way, the 1year of LL.M. counts toward the 2years mandatory italian legal practice, at least at Florence Bar.
Ciao,
indigo

Hi everyone, it looks like we are all italians ;)!
Ho fatto domanda in 4 università (NYU, Cornell, GULC and HLS) e solo quest'ultima mi ha rifiutato. Andrò a GULC.
Magari cercano cose diverse in anni diversi.
