Hello,

I would like to know whether graduation from LLM program (in Democratic Governance and Rule of Law) from Ohio Northern University allows you to take NYC bar exam? Is there anyone with such experience or who has heard of such eligibility?

Thank you,
Monica

If you are interested in pursuing an LLM degree in order to qualify to sit for the New York State bar exam you should review the requirements of NY Court of Appeals Rule 520.6 [22 NYCRR 520.6]. Rule 520.6 contains specific curriculum requirements for the LLM degree to qualify for the NY bar exam including, at least 2 credit hours in Professional Responsibility, 2 credit hours in Intro to US or American law, 2 credit hours in a course in Legal Research, Writing and Analysis and 6 additional credit hours in coursework that is tested on the NY bar exam. There are other additional requirements in Court Rule 520.6 that you should be aware of before you commit to a specific LLM program. I would also recommend that before you commence an LLM that you request an advance evaluation of eligibility to sit for the bar exam from the NY Board of Law Examiners. It is better to find out now whether your foreign law school study will qualify you to sit for the bar exam before you commit a great deal of time and money on an LLM degree that may not qualify you to sit for the bar exam. Good luck.

Thank you very much! I will check the curriculum of this LLM against the Court Rule 520.6.

I already have one LLM from the Netherlands, and definitely am not interested in doing another one in the US solely in order to return back to my country afterwards. I know its very difficult to find a job in the US, but at least to be qualified for the exam would be worth of time and effort.
