NYU - residence

So, what's everyone doing about residence? I'm thinking of living in one of the NYU 'low-rise' residences. What about fellow LLM's? On-campus? Off-campus?

If there are any current NYU LLM's on this board, I was hoping to get some feedback in regards to residence.

Hi, I would also like to get some info about hosuing. I am thinking about D'Agostino Hall as it looks and good and fits my budget too. Anyone else opting for the same Hall. I am vegetarian from India.

@3pointthreat if you have a NYU net id you can take some current LLM students email from the directory and write to them.

Anybody knows whether we can cook in the on-campus apartment? As I am a vegetarian, really have to cook by myself. Thanks!

I believe cooking is fine as all the apartments seem to be equipped with a kitchen and utensils.

Hi!

I am currently at NYU doing the LLM Trade Regulation Program. I live in Mercer residence which is great - close to school, has its own kitchen, has computer rooms, all the utilities (including cable and phone) are included in the price, etc. I would advise you to either take the Mercer or teh D"Agostino residences, which are the best. Also, most of your colleagues and friends will live in those residences, so it will be great to be able to meet everybody there.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi mrobledo,
I would like to know how the allotments are made, can me make any specific requests as far preference for an aparmentmate or is it alloted automatically. Does everyone who applies for housing on campus gets an allotment or is on a lottery draw basis? Thanks

Thank u mrrobledo!
I am planning to stay at Mercer. Could u give me a piece of advice wheter to go to a B or C apt. type? It seems that the only diference betwen them is that type B have terraces, while type C don´t. But the both are the same size. Is having a terrace an important advantage? or it "eats" space from the rest of the apt?
I wolud also appreciate your help regarding tiers L, M or U, and 1 (quiet), 2 (less quiet) and 3 (less than less quiet) locations.
Thank you!!!

Hi...I'm going to try to respond to both questions:

1. As for the allotment - it works as a lottery, and depending on the date you requested housing they assign you space. I think most of the people who request Mercer get Mercer.

2. As for the terrace - its pretty fun to have a terrace, although you don't use it too much in the winter - but in the Spring you get pretty good days and we've even done BBQ's in friends apartments with terrace. If you apply for an apartment with a terrace, you'll probably get an upper level apartment, which is great cause you don't get any noise. Also, if possible, avoid the apartments that are on the Broadway side. I live on the 6th floor, my apartment facing Broadway, and its REALLY noisy - I can even feel the subway! I got used to it after the first month though (don't panic), but please try to get an apartment facing any other street (preferably take an apt. facing Mercer Street).

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the tips mrobledo! They're most helpful.

One more question: how do I make sure which side my room will be facing? Do I include that as a special request in my application? Or are certain apartment types located on the Broadway side, and others on the Mercer St. side? Thanx so much.

Hi, all. Just to share with you. I will live off-campus by taking the lease from a friend who studies at NYU and lives 30 minutes away by subway from the law school. Monthly rental, - US$500! I can take subway to law school very easily. Room quality is a little better than the dorm, but with much bigger space than the dorm. I was told the dorm is really too small. No strange, MYU Law locates at the right downtown. One of my fridend's husband was in NYU Law last year. He finished one year study and bar exam with US$18000! Of course, living off-campus. He said it's helpful to communicate with average Americans and learn how they live and work. Knowing the soceity is vital for understanding the legal environment in NY. So, don't be afraid to living off-campus.
