admitted today for tax program. I am a domestic applicant
Hi W&L2008,
I am also a domestic JD student from a T25 law school. I was admitted to the tax program back in February. Because of the economy, I'm seriously considering declining and reapply next year. Some people are trying to scare me that by declining admission to NYU this year, it will be held against me when I reapply especially if I don't ask for deferral. But someone else on this board claimed that they that they reapplied this year and were accepted, and now you also reapplied and were accepted. May I ask when you applied this year. I'm wondering if they held off on offering you admission until now because you did decline. I realize there are many domestic students out there who haven't been admitted yet, and I'm certainly not trying to scare any of them. I'm sure many of them will be admitted in the coming weeks. But if you were in the top 10% in T25 school, I would think they would have accepted you quickly. You said yourself that last year you were admitted in February. I of course don't know all your details, but I am wondering what your take is on this. By the way, I assume you didn't get a Graduate Tax Program scholarship last year or this year. Do you know if any domestic students get one? What kind of credentials are they looking for?
Any info would be appreciated. Also, will you be accepting admission this time? I'm just worried that law firms will not be interviewing next year. Again, I'd appreciate your thoughts on all of this. This is a really difficult decision for me. I really wanted to go to NYU for tax and it is the only place I applied. But I just don't feel I can enter into this kind of debt with no job and the other side. Thoughts opinions feelings?
Thanks,
rbp
Hi rbp,
If you decide not to go this year, I would ask for a deferral if I were you. It is much easier than applying again simply because you will be able to know where you stand from the beginning.
I applied back in November. I'm not sure why it took longer this year. I kind of doubt that it was because they were teaching me a lesson for not accepting last time, but you never know.
No scholarship this year or last year. I also learned yesterday that I did not get one of the Grad Tax Scholarships at Gtown. I'm not sure who ends up with these, but whoever they are, they must be more impressive than I am.
I have no idea what I will do as far as attending. I am currently employed in Biglaw and am reluctant to leave given the state of things. However, I could be let go any day now on account of the slow work flow. I think I may accept so that I will have something to do if I am fired soon. If I hang on at my job I would have to make a decision to either leave or inquire about deferring admission to the following year.
I agree that the idea of more debt in a crap economy is a scary proposition.
Best of luck.
