Michigan v. Duke

Hi guys, quick question: for a general LLM, which one would you choose: Michigan or Duke? I think that both schools are basically on the same level, reason why I really need your comments to decide... Anything that I should be aware of? Thanks!

I visited Duke over Christmas holidays and really fell in love with the campus. It is beautiful, amazing facilities, friendly people etc. The support from the law school seemed great- they have specific job fairs/cv workshops etc for LLM students and there's a trip to NY to met former Duke students who are now partners in NY firms. I also sat in a few classes and the professors really impressed me. The classes were very interesting and engaging.

I don't know much about Michigan. When I met other LLM students at Duke though they seemed extremely happy with their choice. A lot had gotten into Chicago and NYU and picked Duke for the small town-small school atmosphere.

I hope that helps! Best of luck with your decision

Both schools are amazing. I'd choose it by whether you prefer cold (Michigan) or heat (Duke) :-))

I am currently attending the LLM Program at Michigan and could have not made a better choice!!
I come from a tropical country and have not found the weather as brutal as people say it is (plus, there are heating and thermal clothes these days) so I would say you should not worry about the cold.
Ann Arbor is great, really convenient, with an excelent environment to study and enjoy, plus only thirty minutes away from the Detroit airport. Once you come you can´t help feeling that you belong here. People are super nice and collaborative.
The law school is impressive, with one of the best (and most beautiful) libraries.
Also for me, what makes this program excellent is the amount of courses and class of professors you will find in the curriculum and the availability of the courses for the LLM students. I have friends in LLM programs in other schools that could not get to take all the courses they wanted because the classes were full. Consider, most of these programs are only a year length. Also, the school is pretty helpful when it comes to find a job after graduation, including that Michigan participates in the NY job fair (Columbia) every year, so that is excellent too.
Good luck with your decision!

To be honest, I don't think that Duke is on the same level as Michigan. I'd definitely go for Michigan given that choice!
I admit I'm somewhat biased as I am a current Michigan LLM. I didn't apply to Duke, but I did turn down Chicago and UCLA among others in deciding to go here. Never regretted my choice and like it here even better than I thought!
The cold is not that much of an issue as many people seem to think. I totally agree with pr10. I mean, even if it's really really cold outside (which is not that often) and you don't like that, you can stay inside. Michigan's facilities are beautiful and great to hang out in (just look at this for a glimpse: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqSFHJ1LBHI) - and I'm pretty sure they don't rent out houses without heating around these parts... :) Housing generally is not too far from the Law School, so even on your way to and from there, winter weather doesn't really matter!
Good luck!

Thank you so much for sharing your opinions as a Michigan LLM student : ) May I just ask you why you turned down Chicago's offer and prefered to go to Michigan instead?
