LLM or the JD?

student21

Hey,

I live in the UK, I have completed my academic education in London and now intend to move to the States. I have been told the JD and the LLM are my options. I am a bit lost about which one is the better option for me. I am aware that the JD will take 3 years and the LLM will take 1 year only. But in terms of pursuing to the Bar exam, etc (the next step) which path is the better option.

The LLM is more of an 'academic' degree, after which you can write the bar exam (too), but the JD trains you in American laws (in the first year) just like an LLB does, but at the same time, gives you hundreds of optional courses to choose from in your second and third years.

Most on campus job interviews etc., all cater to the JDs. The LLMs have to make that effort on their own.

I have a law degree from different country and I moved to the US and got married to the US citizen last year. I want to practice law in the US. What option is good for me: JD or LLM? Need an answer soon, please!

Having an LL.M. will not be very helpful to fetch a job. It is J.D. and only J.D. which will help you to get your law career started.
