I'm currently a JD student at Columbia. I must confess that the UAH is the worst department at Columbia University. Some of my friends have recently received their assignments - and even changed units. I have listed a contact person that may be able to assist you. The information was taken from a blog of Columbia Law Students.

"I called the housing office and they told me that Anissa Caesar is the person to call. Her e-mail is art2@columbia.edu and her phone number is 212-854-9311."

I suggest you contact Gezhi Hu at gh2114@columbia.edu. He should be able to give you further guidance. Just indicate that Joe from Torts referred you to him.

Hi All,
This is on CLS's website regarding the LLM:

"Applicants from law schools abroad who have not completed at least five years of undergraduate and legal education combined must have been admitted to the bar and practiced for at least one year after completing their legal education"

Is this criteria strictly enforced?

Thanks

Wow, I have not seen this criterium last year when I applied. Probably this is something new.

Just contact Columbia staff about this in case you studied law in a country where legal studies require(d) only 4 years (e.g. pre-Bologna french legal studies).

I couldn't help you any better than this, as I have not heard about this requirement before.

Thanks Dr. J

Do you have any professional experience after your degree? Are you a lawyer?

Good luck at Columbia!

Nope. I do not have professional experience after my final degree. However, I made several 4-week internships in local as well as international law firms.

I must admit that the overwhelming majority of my classmates have worked before they applied for the LLM, but there are LLMs that have no prior experience whatsoever, so if this is your case, you should not be discouraged from applying.

Hi James, the criteria you cited
"Applicants from law schools abroad who have not completed at least five years of undergraduate and legal education combined must have been admitted to the bar and practiced for at least one year after completing their legal education"
seems to be applicable just to graduates of law schools in the us,australia, canada, ireland, new zealand,uk and english-speaking caribbean countries.
For all of the other students there isn't such criteria. But you have to submit your toefl score.
By the way,i'm from italy and i'm thinking of applying for an llm at columbia.
Good luck to everybody!
