JOB PROSPECT for UT, GWU, GT, Vanderbilt,

BettyChen

Hello everyone,

This is my first post on LLM guide discuss board :)

Recently, I've got admission from Georgetown, GWU, UT-Austin, and Vanderbilt(+17000).

These are excellent law schools regarding their academic credentials.
But now I want to focus on the job prospect.

My plan after LLM is to get an intern and employment in the US because I want to gain some experiences working in the US and my bf will still be studying for his PhD. in the US when I graduate from 2011-2012LLM.

I would take NY Bar after graduation.
I really want to know which school I should choose to have a job after finishing LLM.
My plan is:

If I choose UT, I will seek for a job in Texas, if I choose GT or GWU, I will seek for a job in DC.
But if I choose Vanderbilt, I would seek for a job in both TN or GA.

I know it's hard for LLM graduate to have a job in the US, but I'm not seeking for an employment in big firm.
Small law firms or companies would be fine.
I'd like to know the relative possibility.

I'm struggling to make my final decision >"<

Hey, Iam not from the US but after spending alot of time readin people's threads and also other information, I dont think there is a university in the US you can go to for an LLM degree as a foreign student and it will guarantee you employment in the US. I have heard people talk abot how some LLM students failed to get employment even after there Harvard LLM degree.
I think it comes down to what area you will specialise in, networking skills, competitive edge, LUCK and maybe your grades during the LLM degree.
Those law schools are all great law schools, maybe i would go for Georgetown, but as i have said there is no guarantee that you will get employment. By the way you should also consider the one which gives you better fin aid.
I also have the same goals as you though i was offered admission to BU, Cornell and LSE so iam also trying to choose which is best for me since i want to specialise in corporate/commercial law.

Hello Dwin,

Thanks for your comment.
I understand that there is no guarantee for an employment after LLM.
I will go for LLM no matter there is a possibility for a job or not.
So the "relative possibility" becomes one of the criteria for me to choose from these good schools.

By the way, I apply for General Program since I just earned my LLB last June and this is my first graduate degree I don't want to limit my future too early.
But I guess I will take more credits for busniss and corporate laws. (I also minor in Accounting in my college.)

Congratulations to you~ the admissions you got are from some excellent law schools!
Feel happy for you!

Can I ask you why you would shoose Georgetown?

Well correct me if iam wrong bt Georgetown has a specific concentration in i think business and securities law program. It has a stellar reputation outside US atleast in my country it does.
GWU is much better in IP and not business law.

I think one factor you should also consider: which one is nearby your BF's location?

BTW: I was also admitted to UT and Vanderbilt. Don't know how to choose between them.

Hi YJR,

Thanks for ur sharing~
Maybe we'll become classmates!!

My BF got UT and GeorgiaTech.
So we can both go to UT or He goes to GeorgiaTech and I go to Vandy.

For now, I tend to choose Vandy because the financial aid and their small class size.

But still I cannot make my decision now...

So you will follow your BF"s decision? Then it's simple. Georgia Tech and UT, which one is better for him?

Yeah, I also like Vandy's small class size. I intend to focus on IP field+commercail/corporate, UT might be a better choice. However, I also concern that whether it's easy to access to professors at UT with a larger class.

My BF hasn't decided yet either.
So I'm still thinking.

Considering both your and your BF's prospects, UT seems the best choice.
Everyone, included but not limited to professors, is really friendly and accessible, not all classes are big, Texas' economy is *relatively* impervious to recessions, and Austin is probably the most fun city ever.
