Question: do some school give hints to applicants that they’ll be admitted from correspondence before decision release dates? Perhaps the tone of an email response indicating they’re excited about your application?

When a program tells you “i look forward to seeing you in The fall” before the admission decision is released thats a pretty good sign that you’re admitted. Also some past posters stated that some schools were slow in responding to their emails. Some schools didn’t respond at all. Later that person received a rejection.
