Do consider that you might be in competition with countries like Belarus and Ukraine.

I am finishing law school in US and am applying for LLM in US. But I do have a Russian passport, if that counts for anything. By the way, I wanted to find out if Russian law faculties offer anything similar to US LLM programs?

Hi ichebotariov!

Just wondering... I thought LLM is for foreigners - ie, not for US graduates? (save for nyu tax)..where are you applying? I think Russian law schools have a 2-year program (Magistratura = master of laws)...at least MGIMO has. You should check this... and I think you would qualify for such program. EG, in MGIMO we have an LLM program in European law. Your may want to check it out on www.mgimo.ru.

cheers

Some law schools limit LLM to foreign lawyers, and others do not. Harvard's LLM is for foreign lawyers, but many law schools offer LLM programs for US law school graduates as a way to get advanced training in a narrow area of law. NYU tax is one example, but you can have LLM in Entertainment Law, Environmental Law, Labor Law and many others. I am applying to NYU tax, as well as Georgetown, Boston, University of Florida, UCLA, and Loyla Los Angeles.
I have a follow up question: does Russia have equivalent of a bar exam? What do I, as a US trained lawyer have to do to be able to practice law in Russia? Will finishing Ruissian магистратура be enough?

Yes, we have bar examinations.
Concerning the requirements for the exam you should see the Statute "Об адвокатской деятельности и адвокатуре в РФ", namely article 9. I can email it to you if you want.
However, if you need my advice, the status of an attorney at law in Russia is a very specific one. Sometimes it is not profitable and even loss making. For instance working under labor contracts is forbidden for attorneys at law.

Besides, you don't have to be an attorney to "practice law in Russia".

Yes, basically, you need an advocate status for very specific things, eg, criminal cases. Otherwise, you can practice law everywhere in Russia. Now even in Commercial (arbitrazh) courts. Unfortunately, there's no admission to law practice in Russia per se.... Unfortunately!!

Hi guys!

I would like to join your community:))) I am from Alma-Ata, Kazakhstan and going to apply to LLM of Cornell and UPenn this year. Actually I won the government scholarship that will finance my education in the USA. So no problem with the funds, but I still struggling with my personal statement.

Cheers
