I do plan to enroll at GWU this fall and have done everything necessary so far. I have also gotten my 1-20 from the university. The problem now is accommodation. What about you?

I have applied and am now (urgently) awaiting a decision. The plus side is that I live about 15 minutes drive away.

I am in my last year of an LLB -- I hope I can a response soon.

Hi guys!!! I am from India and I had applied to various US Colleges for an LLM in IP. I have been admitted to Berkeley and GW. Additionally, GW has awarded me the Thomas Beurgenthal Scholarship (50% tuition waiver).

I am very confused: Whether to take the 50% Scholarship or go to Berkeley. Things weighing in my mind are that on the one hand Berkeley is among the top 10 colleges in US and also number one for IP. On the other hand, GW is also a very good college and number 3 for IP.

Hope you guys can help me decide!!!

Regards,
Anshul

hi, anshulm! when did you receive your admission and scholarship award? is it communicated on the same e-mail? as to your confusion, i think you should make a decision based on what you feel from your heart, your innermost desires and what makes you feel happy. remember that when you are happy with what you are doing and cheerful with the result of the decision you make, i'm pretty sure that you'll be happy during the entire year of your study.

so, now you must ask yourself "What really makes you feel happy - this school or that school"

hope that you'll have a wise decision soon. please let us know and post your developments there!

GW is better in courses related to the pure 'cores'of IP, copyrights and patent..do not forget that it is the first IP program in the world..
Berkeley's program in Law & Technology is more specialized in other domains more modern ones except for the aforementioned ones.
now, if you have no financial issues then go for Berkeley. but if the tuition waiver (50% wow) is enough for you then join GW...nevertheless, both programs if you want to continue ur career as a lawyer will give you the extra push you need..as per the ranking.number 1-7 are all top of the top unis..i dnt think that you may lose a job if you have to compete with someone that has a LLM in IP from NYU, HARVARD, STANFORD, Texas..but this does not mean that you will also get the job because of the higher ranking...
I am waitlisted at Berkeley. I would chose this because in the near future I d like to create my own start up company.if you wanna continue ur legal carreer, then do the most smart move that will be to attend GW, as ur studies cost will be extremely low, and thus will not affect ur economic status....
anw, best of luck..do ur best;)

hi tsis! good day to you! you are very much welcome... for me, i will likened your case/dilemma to a situation when you are head over heels crazy in love. for me, when i am in love, i always follow my heart because that makes me happy because it brings the best in me... i will do anything to be with my special someone no matter what the cost it entails to me. i will never be happy with someone who has never been in my heart coz at the end of the day i will be the one who will be at the losing end if i make a wrong decision in life and in matters of heart. thus, i will always follow my heart.

it is really tough to make a decision such as this becoz it will spell the make or break or at the very least the "what ifs and buts". it is better that that you must weigh the balance scale taking into account the things that makes you happy, that matters most in your life and the criteria you have set in your academic plan and career goal..

it is only a once and a lifetime opportunity that we will study LLM. it will never be repeated again nor the hand of time turns back in our favor to make changes later on underdone things that we wish we could have done otherwise. hence, for me, i believe that in this case it is best for us that we follow our heart's desire.

After finishing law school in 2004 i relocated from jordan to Canada, the immigration process sidetracked my studies,It took me over 3 years to achieve a legal status and five years to save enough money to pursue a degree.i did have other options but non of was law related.for me to practice in Canada I would have to go to law school for a J.D. Which will cost more money and a lot of time. The reason I'm seeking the llm is to help me bridge a gap between my undergraduate law studies and my future legal career.
I guess the admission committy is muddled by my situation so they decided to further review my application!
Wish all the best of luck

Anshul,

Starlight gave a lovely response. As attorneys, I think that too many times, we are taught to think logically. What is the most equitable/logical/rational solution etc. Thinking with the heart is not something that is covered in ANY legal text.

That said, If I were you, I would ask two questions:

1. What is my GOAL?
2. Can I afford to follow my heart?

1. If your goal is to try to settle in the US then going to Berkeley might make a *slight* difference but NOT much. Moreover, you can go to a forth tier school BUT at the end of the day, your goals can be attained if you network, work hard and apply yourself -- regardless of school. There is always a way to push in America.

i) If you plan on working a soul sucking vampire job at big law, go to Berkeley.

ii) If you plan on finding a small practice with some cool people where you are not working 90 hrs a week, then GW.

iii) Self practice -- it doesn't matter where you study.

2. Can you afford to follow your heart in this economy?

i) GW is practically begging you to join. Berkeley is not. Think about that for a second. You will have wonderful opportunities to network in the city -- believe me (I live here).

ii) If you have a plan to make money and pay back your loans after school then go for Berks.

Best of luck. It's a tough decision!!!

I'm not planning on giving up,I applied very late so I only applied for GWU. I'm never giving up,not my nature,it's a set back but also I believe it wasn't meant for me.
