Georgetown: on or off campus housing?

us_llm_06

Hi,
I will be going to Georgetown and was pretty much set on living off campus.
The other day I received a letter saying that I was accepted to Gewirz housing.
I was wondering if anybody could give me his opinion (maybe even experience) on this one.

A few issues for me are:
-costs: from what I've seen, on campus living doesn't seem so cheap (compared it to some offers on craigslist)
-general atmosphere: I assume most students there are first year law, so it might be a bit odd
-guests staying over: seriously-going to the US means tons of friends are gonna be stopping bye and some flexibility is needed here
-how about the use of messengers (skype) behind the university network firewall?
-others???

As I said, all views are welcome.

Thx in advance

Hey, guys, it is quite strange. I would prefer to stay in campus. However, I have received no response from the Gewid Center. I just called them tody, and a guy just told me that they won't assign the dormitory to LLM students until June. His attitude is really not so kind.

Are you all LLMs?

How expensive is on campus housing? Keep in mind that Washington itself is pretty expensive to live. The lawschool itself is in downtown, as opposed to the main campus which is in Georgetown. Do you know where the housing is? If it's in Georgetown, that's one of the nicest neighborhoods in the world. DC itself, other than in the Northwest, has the highest crime rate in the country, so you should keep that in mind if you will stay in downtown. If you cannot live in Georgetown (the neighborhood), you may be better off looking into housing in Clarendon/Courthouse area of Virginia. This is a very safe and nice area for 20-30 somethings. Much cheaper than DC, too. It's two metro stations away from foggy bottom, which is the station you take for downtown Georgetown. If you're wiling to commute, consider Vienna in Virginia, but this is more if you have a family. It's about a 35 minute metro ride to DC. Another thing to keep in mind is that it is very difficult to find rentals in DC for shorter than a 12 month term. If you look into Virginia, it's easier. I'm at a building in Crystal City right now on a 2 month term, convertible to month to month. Crystal City is another option. Probably the most convenient part of the region, but has absolutely no character. Very safe, though, and the Metro Station is at the bottom of my building.

Hey Dom,

Hope exams went well?

Good point re needing space for friends to stay when they come over. That is a major reason why I have no interest in halls.

What areas you been thinking about?
