if you know what is the subject that you want to focus, so I think that`s a good idea to mention the professor name in the PS. It shows that you are interested and want to work with them.
I did it in most of my PS.

but I do not think it`s necessary to mention if you apply for General LLM.

I did mention professors in all of my statements. I think it shows that you actually have familiarized yourself with the school and its faculty. Although it might be that particular professor happens to be on a leave of absence in which case you might end up shooting yourself in the foot.

For general studies I think it's most important that you highlight what studies you are going to take (as in are you focusing on international law or corporate) and maybe throw in some names as well. It kinda shows that you won't be just mocking around for a year.

I have mentioned professor's work in almost all my applications! But I have heard two contrasting opinions on this- 1) being what u guys have said- that it shows that the applicant has done his/ her research and looked in to the school, profesors etc.
2) I have also heard that this cuts your chances as it limits your interests to these professors you have mentioned since u cant really mention more than three in your PS!
Don't know what is correct!

I remember CLS having such a question. But I did not mention at the time.
