Dilemma - Law Firms Summer Program

Gregor2009

Hi Guys,

Sorry this query is really not on point to "LLM" but I thought I should ask anyway. I have some queries with regards to the Summer Programs offered by Law Firms in CA and NY and would appreciate your guidance/tips if any.

Essentially, I am qualified to practise law in another common law jurisdiction and have 1+ years experience in private practice. I will be cross-qualified to practise law in England in a few months. I am currently preparing for the February 2010 NY Bar Exam and would be taking my MPRE in August 2009.

My intentions would be to apply for Summer Programs offered by law firms in 2010 (rather than seek lateral opportunities as they are hard to find in this market and I would use the change in field of practice) and my query would be how should I approach it? I would be interested to be considered by firms in New York and California (because I wouldn't mind switching to take the CA Bar).

What about be the most strategic way to apply to these firms? I do not want to prepare two CVs (one CA Bar one NY Bar) and two cover letters and send them separately to different offices of 1 law firm as I think it is not right. However, would listing my intentions generically as taking the "US Bar Exam" hurt my chances? Alternatively, should I just stick to applying to NY Office of US firms?

Any ideas?!

Many thanks.

How are you applying for hte Summer Programs?

Are you just going on to each firm's website and applying that way?

Yes Gregor, I am doing the same and I had no luck before I had not passed the bar exam. However, I have done so now and I am getting alot more positive responses so this might be something to consider.
