Hi Everybody!

Are there any Germans who have already received an admission email/letter from Columbia? It's quite important for me to know that...

Hi Daniel,
I think there is one German who has been accepted so far, Obligator or so. If I remember correctly he was admitted in November. I figured that he was German from another posting. I am kind of wondering whether CLS does send out any rejection letters or just remains silent... I was actually thinking of asking them.
Cheers

Hi busybody!

I am bit desperate. I have to make a decision about accepting Oxford without knowing the admission decisions of the other Universities ( HLS, CLS). I guess the chances are not very great anyway. As a consequence, I guess I will go for Oxford....I judge it over UPenn in terms of prestige etc.

Daniel,

So for intruding in what might seem to some as a private conversation, but my perception is very different: I do not agree at all that 'Oxford' (for a European law student) has more prestige than 'Upenn'.

Going to study in the US definitely is for any European law student a personal experience that is far more challenging and enriching than going to study in the UK. I also perceive the curriculum of UPenn far more interesting and up-to-date than the one of Oxford, but of course this depends on your personal interests.

In any case, if Oxford doesn't extend its deadline for you to accept their offer, it's kind of 'weird', isn't it?

Perhaps this can help.

Good luck!

Daniel, I personally think you cannot decide solely on the basis of prestige as there is a big difference between an LL.M. in the US and an LL.M. in the UK. For instance: With an LL.M. USA you are allowed to sit for the bar exam which is definitely a plus. Another thing: You are taking many more courses in the US. They might not digg as deep as courses in the UK, but still... As you are focused on a career as an international lawyer, which I assume, you should also take into account that US law is far more important.

Well, all lawyers and law firms that I have asked just told they do not differentiate between a UK LLM or a US LLM as long as you have attended a good program. In fact, the whole LLM thing is more about showing your English proficiency than showing your knowledge in a certain law. At least, so they say.
Although I would personally prefer the experience of studying in the US , 30000$(the gap without a scholarship) is just too much risk for me...

Thank you for your thoughts

Daniel, have you got admission to the Oxford BCL/M Jur program for 2006-7? Have they already started sending out acceptances?

I do not think so. I got admission based on an exchange program in which my home uni participates. Therefore, I have not to pay tuition fees but college fees for accomodation. I save about 3000£ this way. Not too much but still a considerable amount of money. I applied for Oxford seperately as well, but haven' t got an admission letter yet. So don't worry.
Yesterday I confirmed my place.... alea iacta est!

I am sure you'll love the turris eburnea that is Oxford -- which college will you be at?

Don't know yet. It depends on the exchange students from Oxford and where they lived and studied. So you can be lucky or not.... That was one of my concerns, but since the courses in the MJur are not taught in each college it does not affect your study too much in which college you are in. But still there is the college life.... We will see.

I wish you the best at Oxford. I had bet that you would be helping everyone with Harvard's decisions vs...et al. You seem so informed and many of us haven't a clue as to what professors and which disciplines are better at the best schools.
You have been such an inspiring and informative chat participant and I hope that you will still contribute as your plans are now across the pond.
