Hi
I am hoping to take the NY bar exam in February 2018, but confused as to which course to go for.
I am a foreign lawyer (UK).
I have looked at barbri as it seems to be the leading course on the market, however due to my circumstances it is just too expensive.
I guess what I am asking is am I setting up myself for failure if I go with a different course provider? Also considering that the failure rate is high for foreigners and that I might incur more expenses if I need to repeat.
Is there a course just as good as barbri? Can I just buy the material and study myself?
What do people think and recommend? Any advice is greately appreciated.

I think (not sure, though) foreigners fail because of the language gap, so you have an advantage there.
Kaplan is cheaper and I have heard of people passing just fine with it. Perhaps you want to check them.
Anyway, soon enough and until october most companies will be slashing their prices.
One thing I'd do is get my hands on their free MPRE materials and test which you feel more comfortable with.

Barbri is excellent and has been around for a very long time. If you're looking for something that will be a bit more self-study, there is also a company called Themis that has online lectures. And Kaplan is also well known. I think if you choose of one these three you'll be provided with the material you need to pass the exam. Then comes the work. ;)
