Will LLM help me find a job in UK?

run

Hi all,

I'm a real estate lawyer with 3 years of experience. I am neither from the UK nor from any of the EU countries. I've been told that due to the tightening of the immigration laws in UK, it will be difficult for me to find work in the UK (which is what I'm ultimately hoping for).

Will getting an LLM help widen my prospects in obtaining a job in the UK? If so, I am thinking of taking up an LLM in Property Law as that's where my interest lies, and it would definitely help in boosting my career prospects.

Need your advice before deciding on the next step...

It is very difficult to secure a job in the UK for a non-eu citizen. More and more students are now getting an LLM degree, hence your chances may not be increased that much.

Do not forget that it is not you who applies for a work permit- your employer does so on your behalf. He/she must consequently explain to the UK Home Office why the company chose you instead of an EU national. There is also a fee involved. Not surprisingly, many do not want " the hussle"

However, do not despair. As a Ukrainian, I can tell you that there are some opportunities. Aim for international organisations- preferably with an office in your country. Many multinationals have a long-established system of applying for work permits to employ people like you and me:))

Hope this helps, Good luck, J

The advice given here is not quite correct. Those graduating after 1st May 2006 from a recognised UK higher education institution can apply to work in the UK for a year after the end of their Masters degree.

Thank you Dr Riley for your correction. You are absolutely right:) However, in my experience, for those applying for training contracts in the UK ( min duration 2 years) work permit is still an issue and is subject to my previous post. Please correct me if I am wrong though. I would appreciate more information about it myself:) Thanks again for your post, All the best, J
